New Napster a Hybrid of Predecessors

Napster may be long dead, but the name and the “kitty” logo of the pioneer online music-swapping program could return to cyberspace before the year is out. Santa Clara-based Roxio Inc., which owns the rights to the Napster name, plans to shelve its current online music service, pressplay, and roll out Napster 2.0 by Christmas, Chris Gorog, Roxio’s chairman and chief executive, told The Associated Press. Gorog was scheduled to announce details of the venture Monday at the Jupiter Plug.IN Conference & Expo in New York. Software maker Roxio acquired pressplay, a joint venture of Universal Music Group and Sony… Read more »

A Perfect Circle Take New Step

Maynard James Keenan will keep Tool in the shed for at least another few months, as the oddball frontman’s other band A Perfect Circle releases Thirteenth Step on September 16th. Since the release of its debut album, Mer de Noms, three years ago, A Perfect Circle has had a few chairs vacated and filled. Out are guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen and bassist Paz Lenchantin (who joined Billy Corgan’s new band, Zwan). And joining Keenan, guitarist Billy Howerdel and drummer Josh Freese is Jeordie White, who formerly recorded as “Twiggy Ramirez” for Marilyn Manson. A Perfect Circle have lined up a… Read more »

MxPx Do "Everything" New

MxPx will release Before Everything and After, their first album in three years, on August 19th. The album has been delayed twice before: first because of mastering issues, and a second time while the band changed the sequencing. “It’s Metallica time,” jokes drummer Yuri Ruley about the extended gap between records. “We’ve put out thirteen brand new recordings since our last full release,” frontman Mike Herrera explains. “That’s almost a full album.” The Renaissance EP included nine of those songs, two more new tunes were added to the greatest hits collection Ten Years and Running and two were on a… Read more »

New Sum 41 Single Inspired By Pounding Case Of Regret

After a night of partying, the only thing worse than a hangover is a pounding case of regret to keep it company. Unfortunately Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley has woken up to the insufferable couple more times than he’d care to recall. While a headache and peaked feeling usually vanish with some aspirin and rest, embarrassment lasts a lot longer. And it’s that “what the hell was I thinking?” feeling that inspired Sum 41’s next single, “Over My Head (Better Off Dead).” “It’s [about] regretting something you said, usually the night before,” Whibley said. “Like, a lot of times, I… Read more »

In the words of one of their songs, Dancing Days are here again for fans of Led Zeppelin. Defunct for almost 23 years, the pioneering English band behind such hard rock classics as “Stairway to Heaven” and “Kashmir” has cleaned out its vaults to issue eight hours of previously unreleased live material on DVD and CD. The “Led Zeppelin DVD” contains footage from four tours spanning 1970 to 1979; the CD “How The West Was Won” combines two Los Angeles shows from 1972 to replicate a single concert. Remarkably, the band’s leader and guitarist, Jimmy Page, who compiled the releases,… Read more »
