Madonna Cancels New Jersey Show


There’ll be no “Music” in New Jersey Friday night. A case of laryngitis forced Madonna to cancel her August 3 show at the Continental Airlines Arena. The show, the second of two sold-out concerts at the arena, will not be rescheduled, according to a statement from promoter Clear Channel Entertainment. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase, and online and telephone orders will be automatically refunded. EMI, Giga To Offer Music Online


Taiwan high-speed Internet access firm GigaMedia Ltd. said on Monday it would sell part of its music Web site to record label EMI Group Plc in a strategic alliance to jointly offer music downloads. Napster Talks With Microsoft For New Platform


Embattled song-swap company Napster Inc. is talking with many technology companies, including Microsoft Corp., as part of its efforts to design a fee-charging service that pays royalties to artists and record labels, a spokeswoman said Friday. “Napster has been talking with Microsoft, along with a number of other technology companies, about how several of their products might be incorporated into the new Napster service. EMusic-Universal Deal Details Disclosed


Universal Music Group, confirmed today that it intends to buy EMusic.com Inc. for nearly $23 million cash. News of the possible acquisition surfaced late last week, but rumor that the proposed buyer was Universal, a unit of France’s Vivendi Universal, could not be verified until the music giant’s announcement of the deal. The company intends to start a tender offer for EMusic’s outstanding shares for 57 cents each.
