Sex Pistols To Play First U.S. Show In Six Years

The tiny, unassuming city of Devore, California, will be transformed into a punk-rock Mecca next month when it hosts a show featuring the Sex Pistols, X, Bad Religion, the Vandals, Unwritten Law, New Found Glory and others. The September 14 KROQ Inland Invasion concert at the 65,000-seat Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion will also feature the Damned, the Adolescents, the Distillers, T.S.O.L. and G.B.H, according to a source close to the show. Last month the Sex Pistols played a gig in London and re-released their song “God Save the Queen,” but this will be their first U.S. performance since their 1996… Read more »

Nelly, Britney, Usher, Papa Roach Take A Beating Onstage

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, timber cutters, miners, construction workers and truck drivers face the highest risk of injury on the job. Perhaps the Labor Department would add “musical performer” to that list if it bothered to assign someone to study the goings-on at say, Ozzfest or the Anger Management Tour – or even Britney Spears’ Dream Within a Dream Tour – to take note of the amount of blood spilled and number of fingers/arms/knees/backs injured onstage. While many imagine that a music superstar’s day on the job involves such trappings as free-flowing Cristal, gold grills, hovering hotties… Read more »

System, Papa Roach Rage On Weenie Roast Stage While Jack Osbourne Holds Court

Not even his father could have said it better. “This is diet Ozzfest,” Jack Osbourne quipped backstage at the sold-out KROQ Weenie Roast. Southern California’s authoritative modern rock radio station hosted its 10th annual summer concert extravaganza on Saturday and, yes, it did offer a glimpse of the summer’s most anticipated tours, especially Ozzfest. Ozzy himself could not make the festivities, as his daughter Kelly was performing across the valley at KIIS’ Wango Tango radio show alongside the likes of Celine Dion and past Weenie Roast favorites No Doubt. Why wasn’t Jack there? “We don’t get along,” he clarified. Representing… Read more »

Britney Spears, Pink, 'NSYNC Songs Get Punk Makeovers

The thin line between pop and punk just got thinner. Green Day, Blink-182 and Sum41 have long charmed the “TRL” audience with their pop hooks and eye candy videos, but now there’s a new crop of punk bands going after pop fans a little more directly. OK, a lot more. On Punk Goes Pop, released last month on Fearless Records, several up-and-coming punk bands cover hits from the cream of the pop star crop. Further Seems Forever speeds up ‘NSYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye,” Stretch Arm Strong gives Pink’s “Get the Party Started” a hardcore makeover, and the Starting Line turn… Read more »

Blink-182 Side Project Shoots Video, Plan Shows

Singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has gone hippie, boy band and even naked for Blink-182 videos, but for the first clip with his new side project, he’s sticking with punk rock. The video for Boxcar Racer’s first single, “I Feel So,” is performance-based with “an old-school punk aesthetic,” according to the band’s MCA Records spokesperson. DeLonge and his bandmates – Blink drummer Travis Barker, Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy and bassist Anthony Celestino – filmed the clip on Thursday at a studio in Burbank, California, with director Nathan “Karma” Cox, whose résumé includes videos for Linkin Park and System of… Read more »

Alienation Lands Simple Plan On Movie Soundtrack, Warped Tour

When you’re a teenager and you’re feeling lonely and left out, it’s good to have a band around like Simple Plan, who have already survived adolescent alienation and funneled memories of their frustrations into infectious pop-punk. “Maybe when the night is dead I’ll crawl into my bed, staring at these four walls again/ I’ll try to think about the last time I had a good time,” Pierre Bouvier sings on the band’s hook-filled single “I’m Just a Kid,” which is starting to heat up at radio and should continue to sizzle while the band is on tour this spring, first… Read more »

Blink-182 Offer Perfect Diversion – Review

If music can be a great escape from the cares of the day, whatever they be, then Blink-182’s fun show on Wednesday, rescheduled from a week earlier in light of recent events, was a perfect getaway. The San Diego pop-punk trio discharged their usual output of between-song locker room comments, and their three-minute tunes, which generally address little more than the standard teen concerns (first dates, school, loneliness), were all delivered with the players’ trademark sense of humor still very much intact. The 75-minute production opened with recent radio hit “The Rock Show,” which was accompanied by a giant flaming… Read more »

STP Make Surprise Appearance At Weenie Roast

This ninth edition of the KROQ Weenie Roast, which saw the annual all-day charity festival return to its traditional Irvine home after it was held in Anaheim last year, was largely divided into distinct segments representing two contrasting sides of modern rock music. There were the angry young hard rock bands (Disturbed, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Crazytown), who toiled under the hot afternoon sun, and the superior veteran headliners (Jane’s Addiction, Blink-182, 311, surprise guests Stone Temple Pilots), who brought the better music and benefited from their post-sunset show times. Occupying a mid-day space somewhere between those groupings was the… Read more »

To Lars Frederiksen, his band Rancid, his label-mates on Epitaph and Hell-Cat Records, and his favorite bands are all about being part of a family – a punk rock family. Fresh off a tour playing with tour with two, high-powered Hell-Cat bands, Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards and the Dropkick Murphys, Frederiksen is set for Rancid’s stint on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour and readying a new, high-tech Rancid release.
