Michael Phelps to present at VMA

He does comedy, writes books, mixes it up with the hottest stars in music and Hollywood. With all this, who needs swimming? Certainly not Michael Phelps – not anymore, at least. But as a presenter at the 2008 Video Music Awards, all that fresh Olympic bling will certainly help. The swimmer who took home a record-breaking eight gold medals from the Beijing Games joins Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and Ciara as presenters at the Sept. 7 VMAs telecast from Los Angeles. British comedian Russell Brand will host. It’s been a busy week for Phelps, who announced he’ll write a book… Read more »

Jonas Brothers notch third-biggest debut of 2008

Not only have the Jonas Brothers notched the year’s third-biggest debut album, they’ve managed the rare feat of having two albums in the top 10 at the same time. “A Little Bit Longer,” the third album from the trio of siblings, sold more than 525,000 copies to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts, according to figures released by Nielsen SoundScan on Wednesday. Only Lil Wayne (whose “Tha Carter III” sold a little more than 1 million in its first week) and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” (which topped the chart with 720,000 its first week) have… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers invade NYC

Quiet time is a rarity for the Jonas Brothers these days. Following a special performance for more than 500 screaming tween and teen girls at Apple’s downtown Manhattan store on Tuesday night, the brothers – Kevin, 20, Joe, 18, and Nick, 15 – huddled in a stairwell, trying to find a quiet space to conduct an interview with The Associated Press. Good luck with that. Even as they spoke, their words were almost drowned out by deafening, doglike shrieks from girls still trying to find a way to get at their idols, who have set off a boy-band pop craze… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers to perform at this year's VMAs

The Jonas Brothers will perform at this year’s Video Music Awards. It will be the wholesome pop group’s first-ever appearance at the event, known for its decadence and eye-popping water cooler moments (many involving Britney Spears). In a statement, brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick said: “This is an awesome opportunity. We have grown up watching all the amazing and iconic performances on the VMAs. It is an honor to be a part of something so incredible.” The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Sept. 7. As previously announced, in a… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers Want to Dress You!

Add the Jonas Brothers to the list of musicians who want their own fashion line. “I’m not saying we’re the best designers in the world, but being able to make what we like, that would be so cool,” oldest sibling Kevin, 20, told me the other day in Hollywood, where the trio was appearing on FNMTV Premieres. “We love dressing up and putting on different kinds of clothes.” And the Jonas empire doesn’t end there. Nick, 15, says a Christmas album is a definite possibility. “We wrote a holiday song, “Girl of My Dreams,” and sang it at the Disney… Read more »

The Grammys at 50 are showing their age

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse is the perfect poster girl for the current state of the music industry. Music isn’t her problem. Everything else is. That’s exactly the same situation that the music industry – faced with lagging sales, a lack of star power and defection from its biggest moneymakers – finds itself in these days. And when the music industry has problems, the Grammys – celebrating their 50th anniversary Sunday – do as well. Winehouse and her stunning R&B revivalist debut “Back to Black” (Universal Republic) are up for six awards; she’s the only artist nominated in all four… Read more »

Christina's New Genie on the Bottle

Suddenly there’s a whole new meaning to “Come On Over Baby” for Christina Aguilera. The five-time Grammy winner and hubby Jordan Bratman welcomed their first child in Los Angeles on Friday. The couple announced the birth in a quick text message to friends and family around 4 p.m.: “Baby has arrived. Mom and dad are doing well!” (Apparently not even the prospect of dirrty diapers can dampen their spirits.) There were no further details immediately available. However, a rep for the singer disputed the delivery dispatch. “The information you have is inaccurate,” the spokesperson said without elaboration. “We will let… Read more »

Spears loses custody of kids to K-Fed

Britney Spears was derailed yet again in her struggle to get her life back on track, losing custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline. A court commissioner Friday gave sole physical and legal custody of the former couple’s two little boys to Federline and suspended the troubled pop star’s visitation rights. Spears was hauled away from her home to a hospital by paramedics a day before, after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit. Commissioner Scott Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14. Federline had previously… Read more »
