Record Sales Numbers Up

Los Angeles – Welcome to the best sales week of this still-young 2005. Contributing to this buoyant frame are historic chart accomplishments by Tina Turner, the fastest start for the 10-year-old “Grammy Nominees” line of releases and, nestled between those two albums, a not-too-motley week for Motley Crue. Album volume for the week stands at 11.4 million, and 6.9 million of those units sold were current titles. Both figures are high-water marks for the year. The volume of digital tracks, which slipped to less than 5 million last week for the first time since the week ending Dec. 19, is… Read more »

Velvet Revolver Relaunching Careers

New York – OK, let’s see: The former Guns N’ Roses bandmates have exchanged one loose cannon, Axl Rose, for another who seems even more volatile, Scott Weiland. And rock critics are placing bets on whether Weiland can get through a worldwide tour without winding up in either rehab, jail or a body bag. But after three Grammy nominations and one hit album, the supergroup known as Velvet Revolver is just getting started. The band consists of heavyweights from two of the biggest – and most troubled – rock bands of the past 15 years: Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman… Read more »

Singer Curses at Inaugural Youth Concert

Washington – You might say the Janet Jackson moment of President Bush’s inaugural festivities came Tuesday at a youth concert with hundreds of preteen Hilary Duff fans in the audience. No nudity was involved, but the Vince Neil-style profanity probably didn’t win rock band Fuel any fans at the Federal Communications Commission, nor from the parents at the concert. Now the Pennsylvania band is just hoping the concert, “America’s Future Rocks Today,” wasn’t aired live. Borrowing a word from Motley Crue’s Neil, the lead singer of Fuel proclaimed, “Welcome to the greatest –ing country in the world.” Brett Scallions followed… Read more »

Rocker Lets F-Word Slip on 'Tonight Show'

Los Angeles – NBC hasn’t received any calls about the F-word that Motley Crue rocker Vince Neil dropped during the live New Year’s Eve broadcast of “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” “Happy f–ing New Year, Tommy!” Neil said to bandmate Tommy Lee shortly after midnight Friday. The remark was carried to viewers on the East Coast but was edited out before it was broadcast in the West, according to the entertainment trade paper Variety, which reported the incident on its Web site Monday night. Leno normally tapes his show for broadcast later in the evening but does a live… Read more »

Tommy Lee Says School Work Is Rough

LINCOLN, Neb. – Former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee said he’s finding his experience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to be a lot of work. In a news conference Sunday, Lee said he loves horticulture, but finds chemistry to be unbelievably hard. Another shock: Learning he had to wake at 6 a.m. to be at Memorial Stadium for drum practice with school’s band. “This is the total fish-out-of-water experience for me,” Lee said. “I didn’t have the opportunity to go to college. I was busy touring since the age of 17. So this is completely strange and bizarre, but a… Read more »

Two Spins on What Happened With Tommy Lee

There’s plenty of spin about what happened at the Bellagio’s Light nightclub when former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee was spinning the tunes. Sean Christie, the club’s director of marketing, said Lee had to be removed by security officers, but Lee’s manager said the 41-year-old drummer walked out of Sunday’s show. Lee was there for a disc-jockey gig during a Father’s Day party, Christie told the Las Vegas Sun in Tuesday’s editions. “He was playing lousy music,” Christie said. “We told him to wrap up his set and make a graceful exit. When he refused, we said we would just… Read more »

Metallica Unveil New Song, Bassist at MTV Tribute

Proving that no one does Metallica better than Metallica, acts such as Sum 41, Limp Bizkit, Korn and Avril Lavigne gamely covered songs by the hard rock group at MTV’s annual tribute concert on Saturday while fans impatiently awaited a set by the honorees themselves. Playing in public for the first time with new bassist Rob Trujillo, Metallica ran through a fast and furious medley of songs, including “Creeping Death” and “Sanitarium,” before unveiling the speed-metal song “Frantic” from their upcoming album, “St. Anger.” Still a little rusty from a long layoff, Metallica performed “Frantic” twice after deciding that the… Read more »

Jury Deliberates in Tommy Lee Case

A jury began deliberating whether to hold rocker Tommy Lee responsible for the death of a 4-year-old boy who drowned during a pool party at the drummer’s home. A 12-member jury met for an hour after closing arguments Wednesday, then adjourned for the evening. They were to resume deliberations Thursday. A lawyer for the boy’s parents told the jury that $10 million would be a suitable damage award. “It would have been so easy for this terrible thing not to take place,” Thomas Girardi said in his closing argument. Daniel Karven-Veres drowned during a birthday party for Lee’s son Brandon… Read more »

Boy's Mom Testifies in Suit Vs. Tommy Lee

The mother of a 4-year-old boy who drowned in rock drummer Tommy Lee’s pool testified Wednesday she would have insisted he bring his water wings if she’d known there would be swimming at a birthday party for Lee’s son. Actress Ursula Karven was questioned by attorneys for a second day before Superior Court jurors. She and her husband TV producer James Veres are suing Lee for wrongful death – for alleged negligence in not having a lifeguard or anyone available to perform CPR. Karven said she first learned there was swimming when a German exchange student who went to the… Read more »
