RealNetworks ®, Inc. and a host of industry leaders today announced the eXtensible Media Commerce Language (XMCL) initiative, an open XML-based language designed to establish industry-wide standards for Internet media commerce. By standardizing the language for business rules, XMCL will enable content to be played in a way that is independent of codecs, digital rights management systems, and e-commerce systems. Scottish pop group Travis believe they may become as big as U2, the group’s frontman, Fran Healy, told a newspaper interviewer. “Do we think we can be as big as U2? It would be rude not to,” he told The Sun. “It’s about longevity and staying together through the madness. U2 are a great example of a band who’ve gone on for more than 20 years, written good songs and kept their integrity. “They are a great role model. Dirty Martini, the label founded in 1999 by modern rock act Lit, will on June 26 release Handsome Devil’s single “Makin’ Money,” with the band’s album, “Love and Kisses From the Underground,” due to follow on Aug. 8. The debut set from the Orange County (Calif.) band was produced by Lit guitarist Jeremy Popoff and Ed Stasium (Ramones, Smithereens). Modern-Alternative rockers Lit have nailed down studio time to start working on the follow-up to their 1999 platinum-plus sophomore release “A Place In The Sun.” Lead vocalist A. Jay Popoff, guitarist Jeremy Popoff, bassist Kevin Baldes and drummer Allen Shellenberger will head into the studio on May 14 to begin recording their new project. The plot was spoiled well before Eric Clapton even took the stage of Dallas’ Reunion Arena for the maiden performance of his 2001 Reptile tour. Opening act Doyle Bramhall II and his band Smokestack may have kicked off Thursday night’s show with a thunderous roar reminiscent of Clapton in his Cream days, but the three chairs brought front and center before the main event was a tell-tale sign that there would be no more of that tomfoolery. When the members of U2 walked off the stage on their 1997-1998 “PopMart” tour, the final image was a heart framed by the outsized “golden” arch – a juxtaposition that perfectly encapsulated that tour’s muddy concept, as the group had strained to find a balance between earnest emotion and smirking irony. Joey Ramone, lead singer of legendary punk band the Ramones, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the age of 49. The towering front man, born Jeffrey Hyman, did not respond to treatment for lymphatic cancer, a disease that attacks the body’s ability to fight infection. Along with his cohorts Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee – all of whom adopted Ramone as a surname – Joey was credited with helping found the modern punk movement. Lawyers from popular song-swap company Napster and the Recording Industry Association of America held a conference call on Friday with a court-appointed technical expert to resolve disputes over Napster’s compliance with an injunction barring the trading of copyrighted songs on the service. Both sides declined to comment after the call, held on Friday afternoon, and sources familiar with the situation said that U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel ordered the transcript of the call sealed.
