The plot was spoiled well before Eric Clapton even took the stage of Dallas’ Reunion Arena for the maiden performance of his 2001 Reptile tour. Joey Ramone, lead singer of legendary punk band the Ramones, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the age of 49. The towering front man, born Jeffrey Hyman, did not respond to treatment for lymphatic cancer, a disease that attacks the body’s ability to fight infection. Lawyers from popular song-swap company Napster and the Recording Industry Association of America held a conference call on Friday with a court-appointed technical expert to resolve disputes over Napster’s compliance with an injunction barring the trading of copyrighted songs on the service. The Kentwood, Louisiana, pop princess wrapped a week of shooting on Monday (March 19) in nearby Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Hammond, according to the Louisiana Film and Video Commission. More than 1 million music files were to have been blocked from being traded on Napster during the weekend in an attempt to persuade a judge to keep the controversial file-swapping service in business. On Sunday, Napster had yet to block the files in question. A spokesman said Napster still was working on the technology and expected the filtering process to be in place by Sunday night. A mediator appointed by the judge in the Napster case has been negotiating a deal to allow the popular online music-swapping service to survive without violating copyright laws, according to a published report. An appeals court last Monday upheld a July 2000 ruling by U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, who found Napster guilty of copyright infringement. Patel appointed former federal judge Eugene Lynch as a mediator between Napster and major record companies, the article in the February 26 issue of Newsweek magazine said.
