Oasis Turn To Heathens, Hedonism For Inspiration On New LP

Following waning U.S. album sales, Oasis should probably call on high for divine inspiration. Instead, the perverse Brits are naming their fifth record Heathen Chemistry. The album will come out in July, and the first single, “Hindu Times” – part of which sounds like a psychedelic spin-off of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” – will be released to radio in the next two weeks. A black-and-white video for the song was directed by Wiz, and features shots of the band onstage juxtaposed against images of a gun barrel, a sign flashing “pills or bombs,” and X-rays of vocalist Liam Gallagher,… Read more »

Rock Steady Show Leaves No Doubt About '80s Revival – Review

If Republicans, “Dukes of Hazzard” reruns and an abundance of heavy metal weren’t enough to convince you, No Doubt’s Rock Steady road show leaves little doubt that the 1980s are back. On the tour’s opening night, the Orange County ska-popsters mined flavors from across the retro-’80s spectrum, mixing driving hardcore and rasta riddims with slap-bass funk, new wave synth and pop queen balladry. With a punked-out rhythm section, two dread-stylie horn players, a guitarist straight out of a Duran Duran video and bare-bellied, necktie-wearing Gwen-just-wanna-have-fun-Stefani up front, they even looked the part. The drum set glowed under the Memorial Auditorium’s… Read more »

Five Questions With Lil' Bow Wow

Going into his ninth year in the entertainment business, pint-sized rap star Lil’ Bow Wow is branching out – more music, movies and even a clothing line. Heady stuff for someone who turned 15 on March 9. Since being discovered at age 6, the 5-foot protege of rapper-actor Snoop Dogg has set the stage for other young rappers. His teen-age fans have pushed his two albums, “Beware of Dog” and “Doggy Bag,” to platinum status. His story is old hat in hip-hop circles. In 1993 while on the Chronic Tour, Snoop pulled the boy – who was born Shad Moss… Read more »

Cher's Next Tour Will Be Her Last, She Says

The beat can only go on so long. Cher’s upcoming tour behind the just-released Living Proof will be the 55-year-old singer’s last. “I want to do some movies and I really haven’t had time to,” Cher said last week. “There’s a musical that I really want to do called ‘The Enchanted Cottage,’ and that is the thing that is really closest to me right now. I have never had the chance to sing and act in a movie.” Cher, who won a Best Actress Oscar for 1987’s “Moonstruck,” believes musicals could make a comeback following last year’s Oscar-nominated “Moulin Rouge.”… Read more »

Dido Remix Earns Grammy Thanks To Eminem's 'Stan'

A remix of Dido’s most popular song, “Thank You,” by production duo Deep Dish was among the Grammy winners announced Wednesday (February 27). The new version won in the category of best remixed recording, non-classical; besting new takes on songs by Depeche Mode, Bob Marley, Sunshine Anderson, and Samantha Mumba. However, Deep Dish’s Ali Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi say that the strength of the new version was based not on the chorus of “Thank You” but on the verse that Eminem sampled in his own hugely successful “Stan.” Shirazinia explained, “We actually didn’t use the main chorus of the original… Read more »
