MTV to Move Video Music Awards to Miami

MTV will take its irreverent Video Music Awards to Miami this year. The live event, in its 21st year, will be held Aug. 29 at the AmericanAirlines Arena, the cable television network announced Friday. It will be the first time the show is held outside Los Angeles or New York, which has hosted the awards in recent years. But because the Republican National Convention is scheduled for Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, having the VMAs in New York would have been difficult, said the VMA’s executive producer, Salli Frattini. “There were very, very limited venue possibilities in New York because… Read more »

Music Industry Starts Concert Clubs

Worried you won’t be able to land a ticket to your favorite concert this summer? Not to fear, the music industry has a club you can join. For a small fee. In a trend that started with the Grateful Dead and has taken off in recent years, artists are offering tickets to members of their fan clubs before sales open to the general public. Even some venues have exclusive – and pricey – clubs fans can join with the promise of premier seating. The artist fan clubs offer an increased chance – but no guarantee – of getting a concert… Read more »

Time Warner Closes Sale of Warner Music

Time Warner Inc.’s $2.6 billion sale of Warner Music Group to an investor group led by former Universal media conglomerate chief Edgar Bronfman Jr. was completed Monday, and the newly formed independent music company began an anticipated wave of cuts by ousting three high-ranking label executives, sources said. Atlantic Records co-chairman Val Azzoli and president Ron Shapiro stepped down, as did Elektra Records chief executive Sylvia Rhone, a source close to the company said on condition of anonymity. Rhone had been at Warner for at least a decade. Azzoli and Shapiro had also been with the company for several years.… Read more »

MTV Under Attack by FCC

Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl flash lasted less than three seconds, but the impact continues to ripple through Viacom, the media giant that broadcast the game. Congress, the Federal Communications Commission, right-wing radio commentators and outraged citizens are calling for stricter decency standards – and the artists and executives who make a living from edgy music, performances and videos are in retreat. MTV in particular, which produced the Super Bowl halftime show, is in the midst of a wide-scale re-evaluation of its musical, news and dramatic content. Within a week of the game, MTV – no stranger to criticism, most recently… Read more »

Music Award Madness

Beyoncé Knowles, multiplatinum sweetheart of the music award show circuit this year, was exhausted. She’d just appeared on the Vibe Awards and breathlessly arrived across town just in time to change clothes and take bows at the VH1 Awards. “Too many,” she said as she leaned against a wall backstage. Bad planning by VH1 and Vibe? Not really, there were four award shows that week including the American Music Awards and they were bound to butt heads somewhere. With television networks relentlessly reaching for younger viewers, an unprecedented 26 music award shows are now on cable and network TV. “There’s… Read more »

Timberlake Inks Deal To Tell His Story… And Motown's

Justin Timberlake has signed on for two projects that’ll find him taking a good look at his roots – a memoir and a television special celebrating the music of Motown. Timberlake had been shopping his autobiography since October, when he entertained offers from international publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany. Bidding was said to have reached seven figures, but the singer played coy when asked about it at the time. “Possibly, sure,” he said. “I have no idea. I have no clue.” He might have a better idea now that he’s sold the book’s U.K. rights. London’s Transworld… Read more »

Britney Spears & Pink Blow Off NBC's 'Today'

Britney Tells BBC She's a Role Model

Britney Spears insists she is role model for young girls despite recent revealing magazine covers and her new album with sexually explicit lyrics, the British Broadcasting Corp. said Sunday. In a radio interview to be broadcast Monday, the 21-year-old pop star said parents should not be worried if their children want to copy her. “I probably have more older fans than the younger ones, but I think the reason why everyone talks about the younger fans so much is because the parents are concerned,” Spears was quoted as saying. “And in the end they shouldn’t be concerned because they should… Read more »

Britney Sexes Up the Music

If you can believe it, Britney Spears would like people to focus on her music, not her midriff. From her love life to her infamous MTV Video Music Awards kiss with Madonna to her National Football League kickoff concert and her most recent performance in New York’s Times Square, the artist has tested the limits of her sexuality.
