Jane's Addiction Record New LP At Rapid-Fire Pace

While it took more than a decade for Jane’s Addiction to decide to work on a fourth proper studio album, after less than one month of recording together the LP is nearly completed. “It’s going tremendous,” Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell said Sunday. “In three weeks’ time, we’ve recorded eight songs. The only reason we stopped was we had to break down for [Coachella]. And they’re just rockin’, rippin’ songs, too.” The band’s unusually rapid pace has – at least in part – inspired the album’s title, Hypersonic, which Farrell defined as “the ability to go coast-to-coast in a half-hour.” Jane’s… Read more »

'An Angry Angel' – Layne Staley Remembered By Bandmates, Friends

With the passing of Layne Staley, those who knew him best remember him as deeply troubled yet immensely talented. Described as a caring person, he made great strides to elevate an underground genre to the mainstream. In the early ’90s, Alice in Chains, along with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, were directly behind Nirvana on the grunge wave that began in Seattle and cascaded throughout the country. The singer’s Alice in Chains bandmates – guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, drummer Sean Kinney and former bassist Mike Starr – their manager and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell gathered Saturday, a day after police… Read more »

Perry Hits Lollapasnooza Button: Tour Sleeps Another Year

Music fans eagerly anticipating the return of the pioneering Lollapalooza tour will have to wait at least another year. After declaring in November that the mobile festival would end its four-year hiatus in 2002, organizers have delayed its return until next summer. “Having gotten a late start, we felt it would be smart to start building now for summer 2003,” Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell said in a statement. “It will afford us a chance to get the headliner we really want.” The right lineup has always been important to Lollapalooza, which was planning to come back this year in part… Read more »

Area:One Tour An Eclectic Mix Of Artists

The electronica artist kicked off his “AREA:ONE” festival at Atlanta’s Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater on Wednesday, an eclectic music gathering that was pure energy from start to finish. The show began on a high note with Nelly Furtado, who charmed the crowd straight away, grooving barefoot in flare-legged jeans and a black tank top. Strong dancehall/dub influences were laced in and out of her set, including her hit “I’m Like A Bird.” The Canadian singer even offered a snippet of “Get Ur Freak On,” the Missy Elliott song which features Furtado on the remix version. Moby said he created AREA:ONE with… Read more »

Moby's Area: One Leads Festival Tours Back To America

The once fertile scene of Lollapalooza, Lilith Fair, the HORDE and Furthur has dried up in recent years, leaving the U.S. summer tour circuit a less festive place for traveling rock music festivals. So pop auteur Moby, in the wake of the success of his latest album, “Play,” has decided to do something about that. “I’ve spent a long time playing European festivals and was impressed by how eclectic and open they were,” explains Moby, whose Area: One tour opened Wednesday in Atlanta. “There was a period in the States where we had a few really interesting festivals…. When those… Read more »

Ozzfest Ranks As A Top Concert Draw

When the wife of heavy metal god Ozzy Osbourne came up with the idea of a tour featuring the heavy hitters of metal and hard rock, the reaction from the concert industry was lukewarm, at best. “In my gut feeling, I felt that it would definitely work, because there was a huge void in the marketplace for it,” Sharon Osbourne recalled. “Not a lot of people in the market agreed with me at the time.” Certainly, no one can disagree with her now. Ozzfest, now in its sixth year, has consistently ranked as one of the top concert draws of… Read more »
