Capitol recording group OTEP, the provocative Los Angeles-based band whose signing to the label was celebrated with an A-list midnight hour convocation at the Viper Room last month, will join this summer’s all-star OzzFest 2001 lineup, featuring headliners Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, and Crazytown. OTEP’s OzzFest 2001 dates, which commence June 8 in Chicago and run through July 13 in West Palm Beach, Fla., coincide with the release of “jihad,” the debut EP by OTEP, whose full-length debut album will follow next spring 2002. OTEP, whose nightly “ritual of mental alchemy” is fronted by the… Read more »
“We still like to go and bash our heads out and play really loud rock,” says Sugar Ray drummer Stan Frazier. Though best known for acoustic-flavored pop hits like “Fly” and “Every Morning,” the band grew up on a diet of California punk and Eighties New Wave, and its fourth album draws on those roots. The self-titled album, out June 12th, was recorded in Los Angeles with Don Gilmore, who has produced recent albums by Lit, Eve 6 and Linkin Park, and features a guest vocal appearance by 311’s Nick Hexum. The songs were written by all five members: Frazier,… Read more »
Columbia/Loud Records’ Stereomud will be headlining what promises to be one of the most aggressive, exultant and satisfying underground hard rock tours of the summer: the “Pain & Suffering” Tour featuring Columbia/Dv8 Records’ Endo. The “Pain & Suffering” Tour kicks off Monday, May 21 at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan and will feature either Columbia/Portrait Records’ Spike 1000 or Columbia Records’ Flybanger. Inspiration behind the name of the “Pain & Suffering” Tour can be found in the music of the bands: Stereomud’s current hit, “Pain”; Endo’s first single “Suffer,”; and “Make Me Suffer,” the first single from Spike 1000. Currently… Read more »
Sugar Ray recently had a chance to live out their dreams – or at least their dream videos – when the pop-rockers shot a clip for the single “When It’s Over.” “Each guy has their dream sequence – like if they had the video of their choice, what would it be?” drummer Stan Frazier explained on the set of the video shoot over the weekend. Guitarist Rodney Sheppard steps into Bruce Lee’s shoes and kung-fu fights basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; DJ Homicide chills in a strip club featuring imagery pulled from his favorite hip-hop videos; bassist Murphy Karges rocks out… Read more »
July 24 will be ground zero for Slipknot’s as-yet-untitled second album, according to a Roadrunner Records spokesperson. The follow-up to their eponymous 1999 debut was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Ross Robinson. Next week production will move cross-country to New York, where Andy Wallace will start mixing new songs “People Equal Shit,” “The Heretic Anthem,” “Disaster Piece” and just-announced “New Abortion” among other album tracks, with the help of two unnamed band members. The nine masked Iowans, who’ll take to the main stage of this year’s Ozzfest, might also be simultaneously making the club rounds this summer. A tour… Read more »
Russ Thyret is expected to resign as chairman of Warner Bros. Records next month, making it the first hit in the anticipated shakeup at the music group. The departure of the 30-year Warner Music veteran has been grist for the rumor mill since last summer. The writing on the wall got clearer when it was leaked that Interscope Records president Tom Whalley had been hired as chairman of Warner Bros. Records, even though he won’t arrive until January because Interscope won’t let him out of his contract. Warner Bros. Records president Phil Quartararo is in line to run the show… Read more »
Alt-metal act Papa Roach will hit the road in March on what the band has dubbed the Raid The Nation tour. Supporting will be Orgy and Alien Ant Farm, the later being the first signing to Papa Roach’s New Noize imprint. The tour will kick off March 17 in New Orleans. Papa Roach, which also has plans to join the mainstage line-up of this year’s Ozzfest, is nominated for a best new artist Grammy. The band’s DreamWorks album “Infest” peaked at No. 5 on The Billboard 200 last August, and has sold 2.8 million copies in the U.S., according to… Read more »
