Vacancies In Metallica, Bizkit So Far Filled Only With Jokes

We know Metallica and Limp Bizkit will headline the Summer Sanitarium Tour, but what we don’t know is who will be in those bands. Or do we? “We got Yngwie Malmsteen,” Fred Durst deadpanned Wednesday at a press conference to announce the tour, which also features Linkin Park, the Deftones and Mudvayne. “Oh man, he was next on my list,” Lars Ulrich said of the Swedish metal guitar virtuoso. “I’ll take Steve Vai and give you him,” Durst shot back. Of course, Durst and Ulrich were joking. Metallica’s bassist slot and Limp Bizkit’s guitarist slot remain vacant. The latter band… Read more »

Metallica on Tour with 'Motley Crue for the '90s'

Back in 1999, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich confessed to feeling “a tremendous amount of hatred toward Limp Bizkit.” Now Metallica is hitting the road with Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park for the second Summer Sanitarium tour, which will hit at least 18 U.S. markets this year, beginning July 4. All three bands will play headline-length sets. Tickets for most of the shows will be going on sale Feb. 22. Mudvayne and the Deftones will be the opening acts. “We want to play stadiums in the summer, and we need more than just Metallica to fill the seats,” Metallica singer-guitarist James… Read more »

Eminem Top U.S. Album Sales in 2002

Hip-hop phenomenon Eminem trounced all comers in 2002 and tentatively claimed top album of the year honors after selling more than 7.4 million copies of “The Eminem Show” (Interscope/Shady) in the U.S., according to figures released Thursday by Nielsen SoundScan. The album’s performance defied a sharply downward trend in the industry as a whole, as CD album sales tumbled by 9% to 624.2 million for the year through Dec. 22. In fact, Slim Shady beat his nearest rival, Universal Music Group label mate Nelly by more than 2.6 million discs. Nelly’s “Nellyville” (Universal) shifted just under 4.8 million albums and… Read more »

Osbournes As AMA Hosts Might Worry Network, But Not Dick Clark

With the Osbournes hosting the next American Music Awards, the telecast could prove more edgy than in the past. But show producer Dick Clark is not concerned about his decision to enlist the services of the often-foul-mouthed Ozzy Osbourne and his now-famous family. Clark said, “Well, there’s a lot of talk about the Osbournes, everybody’s stirring up this worry, worry, worry! The only person that’s worried is the ABC censor lady. She’s a tad concerned but, you know, I said to her, ‘They’re professionals. It’s gonna be fine…I hope.’” The 30th annual American Music Awards take place January 13 at… Read more »

Crazy Town's Rock Geek Romeo Is 'Drowning' In Video

Sometimes success can be a double-edged sword. Just ask Crazy Town, the rap metal act that scored a major radio hit in 2000 with the lightweight pop song “Butterfly” and then suffered the consequences. “Drowning,” the first single from the band’s new album, Darkhorse (out November 12), was written on Ozzfest 2000, and at the time, Crazy Town felt as if they were underwater gasping for air. The group’s lineup was unstable, vocalists Brad “Epic” Mazur and Seth “Shifty” Binzer felt uncertain about the path they had taken and some metal audiences were greeting Crazy Town with showers of water… Read more »

Music Pirates' Hack Attack

For about an hour Wednesday, it sure seemed like it, with the Recording Industry Association of America’s own Website declaring: “RIAA against music sharing? Not anymore!” But that wasn’t the sentiment of the association; it was the work of hackers. The illegal intrusion came hard on the heels of an industry survey that pointed the finger at file-sharing Websites for declining CD sales-an accusation those sites refute. It’s the second time in recent weeks the industry group’s Website has been attacked, but this assault was even more devastating. Last time, the site was merely frozen by an overload of connection… Read more »

Rapper Eminem walked off with four MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, including one for Video of the Year, in a show bookended by rousing performances by Bruce Springsteen and a rare appearance by heavy metal rockers Guns N’ Roses. Eminem, who also won awards for Best Male Video, Best Rap Video and Best Direction, said of the “moonman” statuette that was MTV’s symbol in its early days, “I’m taking this home for rap – period.” His video “Without Me” won Video of the Year honors. The rapper won four MTV awards in 1999 and 2000. The mood at the… Read more »
