Avril Lavigne, Korn, Limp Bizkit and Sum 41 are the first batch of those slated to pay tribute to Metallica in “mtvICON: Metallica,” the third installment in MTV’s annual series. The artists will perform Metallica covers before an audience on May 3 in Los Angeles for the taped 90-minute special, which will air May 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, according to a network spokesperson. It looks like capitalization and spacing is no good any more for Fred Durst. He posted a message on Limp Bizkit’s Web site saying the band will now be known as limpbizkit with no capitals and no space between words. He gives no reason for the change. He seems to like playing around with words lately, given the changes he makes to the new album’s title. Sum 41 will be busy this summer, but it won’t be on Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium 2003. We know Metallica and Limp Bizkit will headline the Summer Sanitarium Tour, but what we don’t know is who will be in those bands. Back in 1999, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich confessed to feeling “a tremendous amount of hatred toward Limp Bizkit.” Now Metallica is hitting the road with Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park for the second Summer Sanitarium tour, which will hit at least 18 U.S. markets this year, beginning July 4. Hip-hop phenomenon Eminem trounced all comers in 2002 and tentatively claimed top album of the year honors after selling more than 7.4 million copies of “The Eminem Show” (Interscope/Shady) in the U.S., according to figures released Thursday by Nielsen SoundScan. The album’s performance defied a sharply downward trend in the industry as a whole, as CD album sales tumbled by 9% to 624.2 million for the year through Dec. 22. But show producer Dick Clark is not concerned about his decision to enlist the services of the often-foul-mouthed Ozzy Osbourne and his now-famous family.
