Deftones Cancel Tour Dates: Chino Moreno Suffers Groin Injury

Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno has suffered what doctors are calling a “severe groin injury,” necessitating the cancellation of two of the band’s headlining off-dates on the current Summer Sanitarium tour with Metallica, Linkin Park and others. The canceled concerts are Tuesday, August 5th at the Salt Air Pavilion in Salt Lake City, Utah and Wednesday, August 6th at the Big Easy in Boise, Idaho. The group is then expected to rejoin the Summer Sanitarium tour for its remaining dates in early August, although Moreno will be required to restrict his on-stage movements. The Deftones, who have expressed regret over… Read more »

Deftones Not "Morose"

The Deftones aren’t doing much to dispel public opinion that they’re the metallic equivalent of an emo band. They’ve been asked about their love of droopy singers like Morrissey a million times throughout their 15-year career, to the point where it’s a virtual no-no to talk about emotions. Still, as singer Chino Moreno and keyboard/samplist Frank Delgado discuss the band’s self-titled fourth album, they can’t help but mention how feelings were an integral part of its production. “I didn’t really feel much of anything this time around… or so I thought,” says Moreno about the album. “The mood I’ve been… Read more »

Music Business in Misery

When the record industry announced in June that it would begin filing individual lawsuits against hundreds of illegal file-swappers, it was not just a bad PR move, it was a signal that the music business is more desperate than ever. Halfway through 2003, sales continue to slump, down eight percent from the first six months of last year. Three of the ten best-selling albums so far this year were actually released in 2002, and only three artists – 50 Cent, Norah Jones and Linkin Park – managed to sell more than 2 million copies between January and June. 50 Cent,… Read more »

Web Music Leaks Spur Studio Clampdown

Long an artist’s sanctuary, the commercial recording studio is becoming a virtual fortress, guarding against the potentially devastating consequences of theft. The thieves’ targets are the rough mixes, outtakes, alternative takes and finished masters that traditionally have been loosely handled, even by the artists themselves. Leaks of this material are nothing new, but the advent of unauthorized file sharing on the Internet has greatly increased the consequences of this phenomenon. Recent albums by Eminem, 50 Cent, Korn and Radiohead were all available online prior to release, because unauthorized copies were leaked to unknown parties. In such cases, marketing strategies are… Read more »

Metallica Bask In The Love Of Sanitarium

Folks who have checked into this year’s Summer Sanitarium have noted how all the opening bands are singing praises to Metallica. Limp Bizkit even cover “(Welcome Home) Sanitarium” and flash the words “Metallica is the sh-” onscreen during their set. Such over-the-top idol worship might seem a bit forced, but the headliners insist it’s not. And the admiration goes both ways. “The highlight for me is just the vibe between the bands,” drummer Lars Ulrich said during the Philadelphia stop of the tour right after spending 30 minutes hanging out with Linkin Park. “Sometimes when you play these big places… Read more »

Live Avril Exclusive Tracks On iTunes Include Green Day Cover

Avril Lavigne is sending a subtle message to Metallica, Linkin Park and other groups who have pulled their music off Apple’s iTunes recently – Let Go. While several artists have distanced themselves from the online music store because it makes tracks available individually, the Canadian singer is supporting the new service by giving iTunes an exclusive live EP. The five-song collection, available only at iTunes beginning Tuesday (July 15), features “Sk8er Boi,” “Losing Grip,” “Nobody’s Fool,” “Unwanted” and a cover of Green Day’s “Basket Case.” Each track is 99 cents. The material was recorded March 23 at the Dublin, Ireland,… Read more »

Disturbed Demand Liberation, Frontman Urges Ozzfest Newbies To Shine

Disturbed may have learned something from their previous missteps. After their first two clips from Believewere fraught with adversity and caused controversy, the band took a rather clear-cut approach when conceptualizing the video for “Liberate.” Directed by Nathan “Karma” Cox (Linkin Park, Chevelle) and Hank Lena, the video merges backstage and on-the-road clips shot during Disturbed’s Music as a Weapon 2 Tour with performance footage taken from the trek’s finale, in the band’s hometown of Chicago. While it’s a pretty common concept as far as video treatments go, like most of the band’s themes, it’s anything but ordinary. “It’s encouraging… Read more »

Top Artists Balking At A La Carte Downloads

Despite the major labels’ success in clearing hundreds of thousands of tracks for purchase online through services like Apple’s iTunes Music Store, some top artists continue to resist authorizing the dismantling of their albums for Internet consumption as a la carte singles. Some acts are requiring that their music be sold exclusively in album bundles. For example, Linkin Park recently pulled its music as a singles offering from digital services. Sources say the band has expressed concerns about undercutting album sales. Other acts with similar stipulations about their work include Radiohead, Madonna, Jewel and Green Day, sources say. Top acts… Read more »

Metallica Unveil New Song, Bassist at MTV Tribute

Proving that no one does Metallica better than Metallica, acts such as Sum 41, Limp Bizkit, Korn and Avril Lavigne gamely covered songs by the hard rock group at MTV’s annual tribute concert on Saturday while fans impatiently awaited a set by the honorees themselves. Playing in public for the first time with new bassist Rob Trujillo, Metallica ran through a fast and furious medley of songs, including “Creeping Death” and “Sanitarium,” before unveiling the speed-metal song “Frantic” from their upcoming album, “St. Anger.” Still a little rusty from a long layoff, Metallica performed “Frantic” twice after deciding that the… Read more »
