For Built From Scratch, the X-ecutioners’ 2002 collection of scratching and samples, the New York turntablists recruited a host of rappers, including Xzibit, Everlast and Inspectah Deck to add vocals. Despite more than ten years difference in age, fellow Canadians Chantal Kreviazuk and Avril Lavigne formed a relationship of mutual respect and sisterhood – and become songwriting partners – after they met last summer. “We became really good friends, and no one knew we were writing together,” says Lavigne. “Every single night for two weeks, we would write a new song. The Lostprophets titled their second album Start Something for two reasons. One was to motivate people out of complacency. “We spent the last three years touring and meeting loads of people who were like, ‘I’d love to do this and that,’ but they never had the drive to get up off their asses and do it,” explained singer Ian Watkins. “Start something. After they finish their tour opening for Linkin Park and P.O.D. on March 6, Hoobastank will head back out to headline this year’s MTV Campus Invasion Tour. The trek launches March 19 at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and runs through April 24 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Lostprophets and Ima Robot will open all dates.
