Age Limit Raised for 'American Idol'

The age limit for “American Idol” contenders has been raised, but not by much. Two years has been added to the maximum age for the talent competition, which had been 26, Fox TV said Thursday. The minimum is 16. Prompting the change: The fact that so many impressive people older than previously allowed had to be turned away, said Fox programming chief Gail Berman. “I’m sure there are people who are tremendously talented above that but we’re talking about people who hope to have pop careers afterward,” Berman told the Television Critics Association. Auditions for the fourth season begin Aug.… Read more »

Two Spins on What Happened With Tommy Lee

There’s plenty of spin about what happened at the Bellagio’s Light nightclub when former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee was spinning the tunes. Sean Christie, the club’s director of marketing, said Lee had to be removed by security officers, but Lee’s manager said the 41-year-old drummer walked out of Sunday’s show. Lee was there for a disc-jockey gig during a Father’s Day party, Christie told the Las Vegas Sun in Tuesday’s editions. “He was playing lousy music,” Christie said. “We told him to wrap up his set and make a graceful exit. When he refused, we said we would just… Read more »

The Van Halen reunion is looking to be one of the biggest tours of the summer. It marks the first time in almost a decade that Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar have graced the same stage. “It just felt right,” drummer Alex Van Halen says. “Sammy and I got together, and it was like we hadn’t missed a beat. The moment we hit the studio and started making music, that was it. Making music is what is the center of this band – that and the friendship.” The tour, which kicks off Friday in… Read more »

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a libel lawsuit by a critic of violent rap lyrics who said two newspapers had mischaracterized her dispute with the estate of slain rapper Tupac Shakur and others. C. DeLores Tucker, who led a national campaign against rap music with violent lyrics in the 1990s, had sued over lyrics in which Shakur rhymed her name with an obscenity. Her 1997 lawsuit alleged, among other things, that her husband, William Tucker, had suffered loss of “consortium.” The Philadelphia Daily News and The Legal Intelligencer, a daily newspaper covering legal affairs in Philadelphia, were among… Read more »

N.E.R.D., Black Eyed Peas Take Hollywood By Storm – But Justin Steals The Show

Of all the things N.E.R.D. and Black Eyed Peas have in common – a progressive hip-hop sound, a talented live band, a vibrant catalog of songs – what most impressed Thursday’s crowd was a mutual friend. That’s what happens when you’re homies with Justin Timberlake… or, to his friends, J.T. The crowd at the sold-out Wiltern LG Theater went into an uproar midway through the Peas’ encore of “Where Is the Love?” when Timberlake casually strolled onstage to sing the song’s classic “People living, people dying…” hook. At that point, the promoters might as well have added Justin’s name to… Read more »
