Justin Guarini, the second-place finalist for the first season of “American Idol,” has reportedly been dropped by RCA. The label, which no longer lists him on its Web site, declined comment. Guarini’s eponymous debut album has sold 134,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. By contrast, the debut from first-season “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson, “Thankful,” has sold 1.7 million copies. Second-season finalist Clay Aiken’s “Measure of a Man” has sold 1.3 million copies since its release in October. US Weekly quoted “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell as saying, “He’s been dropped. All-American Rejects Make 'Time Stand Still' With New Single

Subtlety is not a trademark for the All-American Rejects, but neither is specificity. Most of the band’s songs address bad relationships and broken hearts, but details of the scarring experiences are often missing. On the group’s next single, vocalist Tyson Ritter sings, “Life is turned, the day I knew you would leave/ I can barely breathe/ Can you hear me scream?” That’s about as close as the Rejects get to confessional revelation. So what exactly is the tune about? “It’s about 96-beats-per-minute and it’s in the key of C major,” quipped bassist Nick Wheeler in a most unhelpful manner. “It’s… Read more »

Ashton Kutcher was the big winner at Saturday’s taping of the Teen Choice Awards, but even his five surfboard trophies couldn’t steal the spotlight from the plethora of unusual appearances at the show. There was Kobe Bryant, accepting the Choice Male Athlete award for the fourth time just four days before his first hearing on sexual assault charges. “I’m going through some dark clouds right now,” he said, thanking his wife and fans for support. Has America Changed Its Mind? Clay Beats Ruben On Singles Chart

This is the night for Clay Aiken, not May 21, when Ruben Studdard edged him out to win “American Idol.” On Wednesday (June 18), the former Raleigh, North Carolina, student had to like what he saw in what is perhaps a more accurate reading of America’s pop-music radar – his trouncing of the Velvet Teddy Bear on the singles chart. Aiken’s “This Is the Night”/”Bridge Over Troubled Water” single sold 392,975 copies last week, according to SoundScan, beating Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings”/”Superstar” by about 107,000 copies. Interestingly, Ruben won the “American Idol” competition by about 130,000 votes. Both finalists are… Read more »
