Fall Out Boy Get Bloody — For Tour Contest

It’s not a stretch to say that on their epic climb to the top of the Billboard albums chart, Fall Out Boy have shed their fair share of blood, sweat and tears – spending nearly five years crisscrossing the country in vans, buses and airplanes will do that to you . But on next month’s tour, they’ll be focusing primarily on the red stuff. Taking a (pretty awesome) page from the Kiss playbook – or, more specifically, the Kiss comic book – FOB will be tapping their veins for a contest, one in which they’ll mix their own blood with… Read more »

CKY Not Ready to Discuss Dead Body

You figure there’s got to be a great story – or a great fictitious one, at least – behind a song titled “The Boardwalk Body,” right? Well, there is, but fans of “Jackass”-affiliated alternative-metallers CKY will have to wait until the fall to learn all about the inspiration behind frontman Deron Miller’s cryptic lyricism. Without giving too much of the macabre story away, drummer Jess Margera revealed that the track is about a childhood trip Miller took with his family to Wildwood, New Jersey, where he “full-on found some dead body under the boardwalk.” Thankfully, CKY’s forthcoming yet-untitled fifth LP… Read more »

Panic! at the Cabin: Rockers Head into Hibernation

There are several thoroughly rocking places a band can hole itself up in to begin work on a much-anticipated new album. But when it came time for the guys in Panic! at the Disco to embark on the follow-up to their platinum-plus debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, they decided to pick one of the most un-rocking places on Earth: an honest-to-goodness cabin nestled in the hills of Nevada. “Guess you could say I’ve been hibernating for the past few months,” guitarist Ryan Ross wrote on the band’s site. “I’ll be meeting up with everyone at the cabin in… Read more »

Skynyrd, Barenaked Ladies Keep on Cruisin'

Atlanta-based cruise company Sixthman has announced the return of three popular music cruises from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Barenaked Ladies and Sister Hazel, which will set sail early next year. Sixthman will launch Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man, the Rock Boat VIII and Barkenaked Ladies’ Ships & Dip III in conjunction with Carnival Cruise Lines starting in January 2008. Each cruise will feature live performances, artist meet and greets, Q&A sessions and other onboard activities. Onsales begin this month. “Sometimes you’ll think that a cruise is for the newlywed, the nearly dead or the overfed, but when it comes to musicians playing cruises,… Read more »

Maroon 5 Back with 'Harder' Album

It’s understandable that Adam Levine would admit to “going a little mad” as Maroon 5 embarked on the follow-up to their multiplatinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane. “It’s one thing making a record, but it’s another thing making a record when you’ve had all this success and there’s all this pressure, and you say you don’t feel it and pretend you don’t, and then one day you wake up and it knocks you in your face,” the singer said. Levine responded to the pressure by, well, partying. “I worked my ass off for four years, and I thought, ‘I’m going to… Read more »

Linkin Park Finish Apocalyptic Album

On May 15, Linkin Park will unleash Minutes to Midnight, their much-anticipated follow-up to 2003’s Meteora. And though the album has been in the works for nearly four years now, it’s actually based on a concept that’s much, much older – and much, much creepier than you might expect. “The title is a reference to the Doomsday Clock, which was created by these scientists at the University of Chicago after the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Japan to end World War II,” Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington explained. “Given the idea that mankind now had this ultimate destructive… Read more »

The Academy Is … Say New Album Doesn't Sound Like FOB

To the Academy Is …, the name “Santi” means many things, none of which make very much sense. “Adam [Siska], our bass player, had this enemy in high school whose last name was Santiago, but everyone called him Santi, and he had associates called, like, Panti, Canti and Fruscianti or something,” drummer Andy “the Butcher” Mrotek explained. “Adam always hated the name Santi, so to annoy him, we all started saying it instead of ‘thank you’ or ‘cheers’ or anything. So it started out as this incredibly stupid thing, the kind of stupid thing you do in a band on… Read more »

Lavigne back in a high-energy pop-punk mood

When Avril Lavigne released album No. 2 in 2004, the spunky teen pop star announced to the world that she was growing up. Gone were the baggy pants and skater-chick image that first earned Lavigne the media-christened nickname of “the anti-Britney.” On that year’s “Under My Skin,” punky anthems like “Sk8er Boi” were replaced largely with grammatically correct, midtempo teen-angst rockers. The album was released a few months shy of Lavigne’s 20th birthday, and the black-and-white Goth imagery made it clear that Lavigne was dealing with some intense late-teen issues. Today, Lavigne is done with all that. On April 17,… Read more »

John Mayer Goes Out wth Alicia Keys

NEW YORK – With a guest appearance from Alicia Keys, sing-alongs galore and an intimate two-song acoustic performance on a small stage in the middle of the crowd, John Mayer’s sold-out performance Wednesday night delivered everything a headlining spot at Madison Square Garden should. After a strong opening set from Mat Kearney, Mayer’s show began with the venue darkened before the sounds of Mayer’s guitar drowned out the screams from younger members of the audience. A blue spotlight revealed him as he began “Belief” solo before being joined by the rest of his band. As the 90-minute set (consisting primarily… Read more »
