As alarming as that might seem to Timberlake groupies, it probably has a lot more to do with the limited number of shows the young stars played than with any sort of pop backlash or classic rock revolution. Jimmy Eat World guitarist Tom Linton says headlining a show in his hometown was a dream come true. “I saw my first concert here – it was The Cure,” Linton said an hour before playing at the Mesa Amphitheatre recently in this Phoenix suburb. “I went out there today and I lay out there on the grass and just looked at the stage. Warner Music Group has cut a deal with music tech firm RioPort to offer more than 30,000 digital singles as a la carte downloads, starting at 99 cents per track, in a bid to kickstart the nascent online music market. Warner will make the tracks available this month in the United States and Canada via RioPort’s distribution infrastructure. In a marked step forward for Warner’s online efforts, the label also will allow users to burn the tracks to CDs or transfer them to portable devices. But don’t be fooled: A closer look shows that attendance is actually down, and the increase in revenue is due solely to a hike in ticket prices, which have jumped by about four dollars. Paul McCartney leads the way so far this year on making money from concerts, but Green Day and Blink-182 win for the number of people who show up. The concert industry magazine Pollstar reports McCartney is at the top of the mid-year list of highest-grossing tours. He brought in $52.8 Million. However, tickets for that show averaged about $130 each. The Green Day/Blink-182 tour is seventh in earnings, with $19.7 million this year. A ticket to that show averages $31.56.
