Alicia Keys, Shaggy Top Billboard Music Awards Nominees

You know an awards show is unique when Now That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 5 and the Beatles are nominees in the same category. But one way next week’s 2001 Billboard Music Awards is like the others is in its recognition of R&B newcomer Alicia Keys, who is the leading contender with nominations in eight categories. Keys – whose “Fallin’” helped her debut album, Songs in A Minor, top the charts when it was released in June – was named Best New Artist at MTV’s Video Music Awards in September, is the leading nominee in the American Music Awards… Read more »

Rob Thomas Doesn't Expect Guest Vocalists On New Santana Album

Carlos Santana is hard at work on the follow-up to his 1999 mega-seller Supernatural, but Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas-who co-wrote and sang on that album’s Grammy-winning single, “Smooth”-says the guitar legend is taking a different path on this outing. Thomas, who’s helping Santana write a couple of songs for the album, said that rather than featuring a bunch of guest singers as Supernatural did, the new album will focus more on the Santana band. “I can’t imagine him doing the exact same thing again,” he says. “He has two unbelievably talented vocalists that are with his band, a guy… Read more »

The Bee Gees Make the Pop of Ages

In a world where artistic lifespans are often judged in terms of fads, most pop music acts last no longer than the trends that briefly catapulted them to fame. And those are just the ones that are lucky enough to end up in the “where are they now?” files. It’s rare to find a band like the Bee Gees, who started their musical career when nine-year-old brother Barry was joined by his six-year-old twin siblings Robin and Maurice. The group scored their first No. 1 hit in their native Australia back in 1966 and broke out to a world audience… Read more »

Demanding diva? Spoiled superstar? “Not me,” insists sultry Latin actress-singer Jennifer Lopez. She says she’s just a “cool, nice person” who wants to make people feel good, who behaves like a professional and who never does anything “that is going to make it hard for me to sleep at night.” Two hit albums, a handful of movies, her own fashion line, and a wardrobe of plunging outfits have powered Lopez, 31, to mega stardom in less than two years. She has just played her first live pop concert – “the fulfillment of probably my biggest childhood dream” – which will… Read more »
