Antonio “L.A.” Reid, who took the helm at Arista Records nearly four years ago and oversaw platinum successes from acts including OutKast, Pink and Avril Lavigne, has left the label, it was announced Tuesday. Reid became president and CEO of Arista in May 2000 after the company’s founder and CEO, Clive Davis, left because of parent company BMG’s mandatory retirement policy. Reid was not available to comment, according to an Arista spokeswoman. Although industry-wide album sales were down from the same weeks of last year in the two stanzas prior to Christmas, an extra gift-shopping day during the holiday frame closed 2003 on an up note. With the holiday shifting back a day, from Wednesday in 2002 to Thursday, album sales are up a whopping 20.6% over the same week of the prior year. A grand jury has indicted a Johnson City man on charges that he tried to blackmail a gospel singer by threatening to reveal the performer is gay. Walbert Keith Farmer, 39, was arrested by FBI agents earlier this month and indicted last week on federal extortion charges. Farmer is accused of demanding nearly $15,000 from Kirk Talley, a Dove Award-winning and Grammy-nominated singer who lives in Kodak, in exchange for not telling Talley’s recording company about his sexual conduct. White Stripes lead singer Jack White was charged Monday with aggravated assault after a fight with the lead singer of another band. White went to a police precinct early Sunday morning and gave a statement saying he struck Von Bondies lead singer Jason Stollsteimer in self-defense. The Dec. 13 fight between White and Stollsteimer began shortly before midnight at the Majestic Theatre Center, where both men were in the audience for another concert. After more than 20 years of seeking and destroying, Metallica are releasing an authorized book of their conquests titled “So What! The Metallibook by Metallica,” which should be in stores by August. The 272-page oversized book won’t be an authorized biography, it’ll be a comprehensive scrapbook featuring more than 1,000 photos, bandmembers’ drawings and roundtable discussions with Metallica.
