Vita Takes It Easy On Upcoming Album

No doubt about it, Hype Williams has the juice. So much juice that Vita is traveling from New York to Los Angeles to work with the video director – though she doesn’t know what she’s in for. “I haven’t read the treatment yet,” Vita admitted Wednesday prior to making the trek to film the first clip from her upcoming debut, La Dolce Vita. “I’m sure Hype has some good ideas. When I get out there, I’ll see what I’m going to do and what I don’t wanna do.” Vita does know that the clip – based on her remake of… Read more »

Cormega Gets Real On Legitimate Debut

Earlier this year, the rap magazine XXL raved about Cormega’s Mega 2001 bootleg, and Vibe magazine gave the Queens rapper props in its article on the infamous Queensbridge housing projects called home. None of these accolades, however, has erased the fact that Cormega – who has recently appeared on albums by rhymers such as Prodigy, Screwball and Tragedy – had a falling-out with former friend Nas and was replaced by fellow Queensbridge rapper Nature in the Firm, the ill-fated supergroup that also featured Nas, Foxy Brown and AZ. Yet Cormega hopes his first legitimate album, The Realness, scheduled to arrive… Read more »

It may only be July but Destiny’s Child are already preparing to spread their own brand of Bootylicious holiday cheer this Christmas season. The trio has a series of projects in the works for the season including a holiday album and a line of Destiny’s Child dolls, to be manufactured by Hasbro. The pint-size versions of Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle will stand eleven and a half inches tall. Each doll will wear an exact replica of the outfits worn by the girls on this year’s Grammy Awards. Little Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle will go for a reasonable $12.99 a pop… Read more »

Australian Rockers INXS Struggle Without Singer

For the first time in almost four years, one of Australia’s most successful rock bands, INXS, is playing a few shows in North America. But the crowd at their recent Los Angeles stop consisted of about 70 Rhino Records employees and a few reporters, just two of the band’s six members were on stage, and the bespectacled singer looked nothing like Michael Hutchence, the group’s charismatic vocalist. Hutchence committed suicide in November 1997, and his bandmates are having a hard time deciding whether to carry on. In the meantime, they have released a two-CD anthology, “Shine Like It Does,” via… Read more »

Janet Jackson Live: Tears, Bondage And Tupac

“Come back to me,” the tiny figure onstage pleaded, her arms outstretched. Janet, they never left. At least that’s how it sounded as her attempt at that 1989 weeper was drowned out by two full minutes of a standing ovation – and that was three songs into the set. Pop Lolitas-of-the-week may come and go, but this Jackson, it seems, is forever, if Saturday night’s All for You tour kickoff was any indication. Following a sparsely attended set from opening R&B quartet 112 and a good 40 minutes of pre-recorded Motown hits, the arena lights went down and the screaming… Read more »

'Puffy' Combs To Release New Album

Sean “Puffy” Combs won’t mind if critics say his latest album is raw, unpolished and without any real theme. That’s the way he planned it. After a year in which he successfully fought criminal charges and lost his high-profile girlfriend, the hip-hop mogul just wanted to put out something that would make people want to party. “That’s why everything is so carefree, everything is so positive,” he said of his new album, which is being released the same week he makes his acting debut (as a gangster) in the movie “Made.” “I lived in a murky pit – a negative,… Read more »

Etheridge Alludes To Woman In Love Song

Melissa Etheridge may rank among the world’s most successful openly gay performers and a poster child for gay parenting, but until now the singer/songwriter has never directly referred to women in her songs. “Even though people know exactly what I’m singing about it, sometimes the gay community gets like: ‘When are you going to sing a song about a girl?”‘ Etheridge, 40, told Reuters in an interview at her favorite coffee house in Santa Monica, California. “And I think, haven’t I done enough already?” The musician from Kansas has sold more than 25 million records and has become an icon… Read more »

'N Sync Still Spinning 'Pop' Gold

When the superstar pop vocal group ‘N Sync sat down to pick the songs for its upcoming album, the quintet found itself at odds with its record company. The Florida-based group, which has sold more than 25 million records worldwide since debuting in 1997, wanted to rock the boat with “Celebrity,” which is due in stores July 24. But Jive Records executives worried that too much change might make fans disinclined to buy, buy, buy like they have in the past. “They were like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t like that song. I don’t think you should go there. It’s… Read more »

The Ramones Reappear On Music Scene

It’s the kind of small moment on which rock ‘n’ roll history turns. It was Fall, 1978. The Ramones had just completed their fourth album, “Road to Ruin,” and the band felt certain it had recorded a hit single: the impossibly catchy “I Wanna Be Sedated.” But the band was overruled; label executives opted for another track, “Don’t Come Close.” That single quickly disappeared, along with the Ramones’ hit-making aspirations. “We really wanted ‘I Wanna Be Sedated,”‘ recalls guitarist Johnny Ramone. “But the record company picked the singles.” So the No. 1 hit in November 1978 instead was the fluffy… Read more »
