Johnny Cash, “The Man in Black” who became a towering figure in American music with such hits as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” and “A Boy Named Sue,” died Friday. He was 71. “Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure,” Cash’s manager, Lou Robin, said in a statement issued by Baptist Hospital in Nashville. Summer touring partners Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera each saw their latest solo albums reach the triple-platinum plateau in August. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Timberlake’s “Justified” (Jive) and Aguilera’s “Stripped” (RCA) for U.S. shipments of 3 million copies. Both albums debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The artists recently wrapped their co-headlining Justified & Stripped U.S. summer tour and now have set their sights on Europe. Lawyers for a New York woman accused of unlawfully sharing music over the Internet suggested Tuesday the recording industry acted illegally when it investigated her online activities and that a search of music files on her computer may have been unconstitutional. The lawyers – Richard S. Ugelow, Glenn W. Peterson and Daniel N. Ballard – are asking a federal magistrate to delay at least until Sept. 10 ordering the woman’s Internet provider to turn over her name and address to the Recording Industry Association of America, the trade group for the largest labels. More details are emerging surrounding the arrest of Phish bassist Mike Gordon on charges of child endangerment. While Gordon was a guest at the Dead’s August 11 concert in Long Island, he disappeared with the daughter of a Hells Angels member. A search for the girl began after the mother of the child became concerned. The New York Post reports members of the Hells Angels found Gordon and the girl in a boathouse near the concert stage.
