Gym Class Heroes start new curriculum with new CD

The Gym Class Heroes have experimented so much on their latest CD that even frontman Travis McCoy can’t quite describe the group’s newly formed sound. “It’s like our last two efforts combined in a sense, but pushed further. Hence the title ‘The Quilt.’ It’s like a patchwork of sounds, different arrangements (and) real lyrics,” says McCoy, trying to explain the CD, released earlier this month. “Musically, I think it’s a big cocktail of everything that’s inspired us over the past two years,” he said. “It is definitely rooted in hip-hop and hip-hop is like the main course on the plate,… Read more »

Jonas Brothers: No Mandates Against Fan Dates

Not that their tween legions needed any more fuel for their obsession, but the Jonas Brothers have just come up with a foolproof way of ensuring the loyalty of their minions: promising to marry their biggest fans. Of course, Kevin, Joe and Nick (who happens to be celebrating his Sweet 16 today) no doubt meant the biggest fans of their respective, private, individual selves–alas, the finer points of semantics have never been the forte of the young and hormonal. “The answer is YES,” the brothers collectively wrote in a post on their MySpace page in answer to fan-generated questions of… Read more »

Lance Bass Talks Marriage, Kids and Same-Sex Dancing

Lance Bass wouldn’t mind dancing with a man on a reality competition show, but he doesn’t think ABC’s Dancing With the Stars is the right place for fancy same-sex footwork. “I think it would be so silly that it would just overshadow everything else going on,” Bass tells me. “It would just be like making fun of something. But if it was another show with all guys dancing and all girls dancing, that’s a different story. I think that’s sexy.” He adds with a laugh, “I should pitch that.” I caught up with Bass just before his practice earlier today… Read more »

Kanye West ends VMA boycott

A year after vowing never to perform on the MTV Video Music Awards again, hip-hop star Kanye West will close the show’s 25th annual ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday, joining a lineup that includes Christina Aguilera and the Jonas Brothers, organizers said. The outspoken rapper was upset by his treatment at last year’s show, when his performance was relegated to a small stage in the Las Vegas venue. West also failed to win any prizes, and accused the music cable network of exploiting Britney Spears, who inadvertently stole the show by badly lip-synching and dancing to her new tune. The… Read more »

Blogger arrested over leak of Guns N' Roses songs

A blogger suspected of streaming songs from the unreleased Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy” on his Web site was arrested Wednesday and appeared in court, where his bail was set at $10,000. FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill on Wednesday morning on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. Cogill appeared in court in the afternoon wearing a T-shirt; his girlfriend sat court and afterward said, “Rally the troops,” but declined further comment. Federal authorities say Cogill posted nine unreleased Guns N’ Roses songs on his Web site in June. The songs were later removed. In later posts, Cogill wrote… Read more »

Music video is reinvented on the Web

The first time Arcade Fire performed in Paris, Mathieu Saura stood outside the venue with his girlfriend, holding up a sign that read, “Please, we want to come to the show.” The band’s bassist, Richard Reed Perry, got them in, and ever since, Saura might as well have not left. Under the name Vincent Moon, he’s gone from a fan begging for tickets to an in-demand filmmaker who has revolutionized music video. His films are stripped down, intimate videotaped performances – shot in one take, often of an act simply strolling down a street or playing in a parking lot.… Read more »

Tegan goes solo for side projects

It’s a big month for Tegan Quin of the Canadian sibling rock duo Tegan and Sara. Also, one day very soon, she will obtain her driver’s license. “In 28 years, I’ve never had a desire to drive,” Quin told Billboard.com from Los Angeles, where she was set to shoot a video for “Borne on the… Read more »

The Jonas Brothers invade NYC

Quiet time is a rarity for the Jonas Brothers these days. Following a special performance for more than 500 screaming tween and teen girls at Apple’s downtown Manhattan store on Tuesday night, the brothers – Kevin, 20, Joe, 18, and Nick, 15 – huddled in a stairwell, trying to find a quiet space to conduct an interview with The Associated Press. Good luck with that. Even as they spoke, their words were almost drowned out by deafening, doglike shrieks from girls still trying to find a way to get at their idols, who have set off a boy-band pop craze… Read more »

Katy Perry ties Beatles record with hit song

Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” led Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for a seventh week on Thursday, tying the Beatles to become the longest-running No. 1 in the rock era for the singer’s Capitol Records label. The Fab Four ruled for seven weeks in 1964 with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Perry was previously tied at No. 2 with the Knack’s 1979 song “My Sharona.” If Perry’s song can hang on for three more weeks, it will tie rapper Flo Rida’s “Low” as the second longest-running No. 1 of 2008. But challenges loom from R&B singer Chris Brown’s… Read more »

Zac Efron's Bod Heats Up the Chemistry

Watch your back, Vanessa Hudgens! Your High School Musical costar Monique Coleman wants to get sweaty with your boy, Zac Efron. Hudgens actually has nothing to worry about. Coleman just thinks it would be a hoot if she and newly fitness-buffed Efron worked out together, because she’s about to start training as a relay runner for the upcoming Malibu Triathlon, which raises money for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “That would be so cute,” Coleman told me today. “I keep seeing all those [paparazzi] shots of Zac, and I’m like, Look at him being all grown up.” Coleman and the rest… Read more »
