It’s been 25 years since he graced the tube as a cartoon Jackson, but the Associated Press, reports that Michael Jackson is returning to his “picture”-esque roots with his role in The Way of the Unicorn, The Endangered One. Jackson will be starring in The Way of the Unicorn as the voice of Sailor, an orphan who works with a poor litte rich girl and a gaggle of endangered species to rescue Earth. The movie is Jackson’s first appearance in a film of any kind in five years. Jackson, 42, last appeared in a theatrical release in the 1978 musical… Read more »

Sonic Youth: What We Really Want To Do Is Direct

Though they’d rather be making their own movies, Sonic Youth are back in the studio laying down atmospheric music for a French film and noisy dinosaur rock for their next album. “We’re improvising and getting into these long, elaborate stretches of music and keeping an ear for soundtrack cues but at the same time listening for how they would work for song elements,” singer/guitarist Thurston Moore said last week. “We sit around drinking iced coffee, and then we start getting it together and playing and all hell breaks loose and it just becomes like a creative mosh pit for a… Read more »

Iggy Pop: A Very Intuitive Punk

Once a punk rock outcast who was locked up in a psych ward, Iggy Pop is now a celebrity, a Reebok model who rubs shoulders with the cream of society. But his elevated status does not stop him from noticing the absurdity of the situation, as he told Reuters in a recent interview: the kid raised in a Michigan trailer park is often the center of attention at various phoney-baloney shindigs. “Occasionally I’ll go to one of these VIP affairs or parties, and I always sorta look around thinking, ‘My God, how shallow and crass these people are! Not like… Read more »

DMX Determined To Be Top Dog With The Great Depression

The inspiration behind the title of DMX’s upcoming The Great Depression is plain and simple: The author of “Stop Being Greedy” has been telling the people who work with him that after his LP drops on September 25, all the other rappers are going to starve. “You thought I’d let you have this sh-?,” he screams on the album intro, “Sometimes.” “You thought this rap sh- was yours? You muthaf ers done lost your mind!” He calms down just a little to give a shout out to all of his friends and family who have been influential in his life… Read more »

Live Turn Tracks Written In Smelly Locker Rooms Into Aggressive V

He couldn’t have been more eager to talk about Live’s fifth album, V, which comes out September 18. Every time frontman Ed Kowalczyk started to explain the creative process for the disc, though, a Chihuahua circled his feet and yapped noisily. “Will you just shut up?” the singer snapped at the dog, momentarily breaking his Zen-like disposition. “She’s a girl and we fixed her,” he continued. “They say sometimes after you fix them they get all barky.” The animal is one of three dogs that circulate through Kowalczyk’s Los Angeles house, where he lives with his wife, Erin, when he’s… Read more »

Eminem Turns Up On Jay-Z'S Blueprint

Roc-A-Fella Records CEO Damon Dash put just a little more of a pimp stroll than usual in his confident swagger as he walked into the penthouse of Manhattan’s Hotel Giraffe Thursday night. Dash was about to show a handful of invited guests his trump card – the new Jay-Z album, The Blueprint, which features appearances by Eminem and, apparently, Michael Jackson. “I don’t want to say we’re the backbone of hip-hop, because that may sound arrogant, but it is what it is,” Dash said before playing seven songs from the LP, which comes out September 18 and features the single… Read more »
