Creed Weathers Quintuple Platinum Sales

Creed’s latest Wind-Up album, “Weathered,” has been certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for U.S. sales of 5 million copies. The set debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 after its release last November, and logged eight weeks on top of the chart. “Weathered” continues to show its staying power, and currently holds at No. 2 on the chart for a second week after being knocked back by Alan Jackson’s Arista Nashville set “Drive.” “Weathered” reached the five times platinum mark faster than any previous Creed release. It was a little more than nine… Read more »

New Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Album In Progress

There are conflicting reports as to whether Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band recently spent time in an Atlanta recording studio. A spokesperson for Southern Tracks Recording revealed, “We’d love to have ’em,” while denying a report from the Backstreets fanzine that Springsteen and company had been laying down new tracks at the facility. Springsteen’s representative revealed that no information was available regarding current recording plans. However, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirms that Springsteen was in the city for about eight days. In addition, E Street Band singer-guitarist Nils Lofgren-interviewed last Friday (February 1) by author, syndicated columnist, and radio… Read more »

Hear'say Accused of Stitch-Up Over New Member

Pop band Hear’Say were at the center of a stitch-up row Wednesday amid accusations that they selected one of their own dancers as a new band member. New recruit Johnny Shentall, 23, was apparently plucked from thousands of hopefuls who had traveled to London from all over Britain last weekend to queue for auditions. But in a front-page splash the Sun said even though the chart-topping band said they had never met Shentall before, he was in fact one of 14 dancers on stage with the band at the Top of the Pops awards last November. “Johnny already knows the… Read more »

EMI shares slide on second profits warning

British music giant EMI Group Plc issued its second profits warning in six months on Tuesday and saw its stock fall 14 percent in early business as the downturn in the global music industry continued to weigh on company. EMI, which had warned last September that full-year profits would dive 20 percent, said pre-tax profit before goodwill and exceptionals for the year to March 31, 2002, would be about 150 million pounds ($213 million). This compares with current market forecasts ranged between 160 and 207 million pounds. “This is a disappointment for us all,” Chairman Eric Nicoli said in the… Read more »

Backstreeter Nick Carter Avoids Jail

Looks like the Florida prison population won’t be getting a Backstreet Boy to play with. Nick Carter, the youngest (and arguably cutest) of the Backstreeters, has avoided jail time and disappointed any would-be cellmates by making a deal with prosecutors in a case stemming from a barroom altercation last month. Carter, who turned 22 last week, was arrested January 2 for allegedly disobeying a cop’s orders to leave a Tampa nightclub following a scuffle inside. On Friday, the Backstreeter agreed to enter a pretrial intervention program that, if he behaves himself, will keep him out of jail and have his… Read more »

Jewel, R.E.M. Offer Passion Over Politics At AIDS Benefit

“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Michael Stipe asked the crowd soon after R.E.M. took the stage Thursday night at the venerable venue. “Practice,” the crowd blurted in unison. “Well, we didn’t,” Stipe responded. “So if you hear a bum note or something that doesn’t sound right, I urge you to sing louder in your head.” The tour-shy Athens rockers and granola-pop folkie Jewel were among those on hand for an evening of spirited entertainment at “You Gotta Have Friends: Partners in the Fight Against AIDS,” a benefit for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Singer sues U.S. FCC over indecency ruling

Singer Sarah Jones on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission, arguing that a ruling that one of her songs broadcast on a radio station was indecent violated her constitutional rights. Last May, after receiving a complaint, the FCC proposed fining the non-commercial radio station KBOO-FM in Portland, Oregon, $7,000 for the broadcast of a rap song entitled “Your Revolution” that contains “unmistakable patently offensive sexual references.” The regulator had rejected an argument by the station that the material was not indecent and that the agency has to consider the artistic merit in deciding whether material is indecent.… Read more »

Blink-182's Tom DeLonge Salutes His Roots On New Album

Perhaps because it’s so hard to honor someone with a fart joke, Blink-182 singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has formed a side project called Boxcar Racer to pay tribute to the bands that influenced him. The group, which also includes Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy, will release its still-untitled debut album on May 14. DeLonge wrote all of the material, played guitar and bass, and sang almost all of the vocals. “This record is directly influenced by the bands that mean the most to me – Fugazi, Refused and, of course, Blink-182,” DeLonge told MTV.… Read more »

Saves The Day Prep For Weezer Tour, Dismiss Detractors

For any young band, the idea of performing before thousands on their first arena tour is a daunting proposal. When the heroically titled Saves the Day were tapped as openers for Weezer’s North American tour, which begins February 5, however, they pushed the butterflies aside and focused instead on rising to the occasion. “Every tour that we go on, we hope to be more comfortable as a live band,” bassist Eben D’Amico said. “Just being able to do our thing onstage that much better. We’re always honing and perfecting what we do.” While the Princeton, New Jersey-rooted quintet may come… Read more »
