Ozzfest Gets Czech Republic Roaring – Review

Strahov Stadium has had it all – communist rallies, anti-globalization protests, gymnastics exhibitions, drive-through movies and, now, Ozzfest. The crumbling structure, which stands as the largest stadium in the world per square foot, lent itself well to Ozzy Osbourne and his latest touring comrades, who hit the venue Thursday night for the seventh stop on the metal tour. With their stage parked in the middle of the field, the hard rockers used only half of the 200,000-capacity stadium, carving out an almost cozy cradle for Bohemia’s metalheads within the concrete monolith. While the tour got off to a less-than-grand beginning… Read more »

Sonic Youth Take "Street" on Road

Sonic Youth will take their sixteenth album, Murray Street, out on a twenty-two-date tour, starting August 1st in Dallas. The tour will be the group’s second as a five-piece, as the group brought producer Jim O’Rourke onboard while promoting their last studio record, 2000’s NYC Ghosts and Flowers. The dates will run through a September 1st appearance at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle and include a free concert at Central Park in the band’s hometown of New York City. The majority of Murray Street, which will be released on June 25th, was written last summer, and the band recorded the… Read more »

Black Crowes Live Album Due

The Black Crowes will release their first proper live album on August 27th. The tracks were taken from the band’s two-night tour finale at Boston’s Orpheum, October 30th and 31st of last year. After the tour, the Crowes went on indefinite hiatus after drummer Steve Gorman quit. “The shows were going so well, I just thought it would be great to record a live album,” says guitarist Rich Robinson. “We were all playing well together with great set lists spanning all of our albums. We had almost five hours of music to sift through.” Whereas the Black Crowes’ first live… Read more »

Clear Channel's Big Radio Ways Are Getting a Lot of Static

Bennett Zier has a fine idea for a new radio format. His eyes light up as he tells you about it. “We play Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Bobby Darin,” he says. “The great thing about it is what we call it. You ready?” He pauses. “Vegas Radio! Is that great or what?” Zier can imagine the whole scene – the deejays, the jingles, the ironic retro-swinger patter. It’s his music, the kind he plays in his car. He’s in love with this idea, and with his natural salesman’s charm, he’s making you love it, too. So why doesn’t… Read more »

Eminem's 'Show' Assured Of No. 1 Debut

Eminem’s “The Eminem Show” racked up 284,000 units in U.S. sales over the weekend, according to Nielsen SoundScan, making the Aftermath/Interscope album a lock to debut at No. 1 on this week’s Billboard 200. In fact, Eminem beats the No. 2 album, P. Diddy’s “We Invented the Remix” (Bad Boy/Arista), by more than 100,000 units. Now, the only question remaining is whether Eminem’s album will top the million-unit mark in its second week, when it has a full week of sales behind it. The rapper’s last album, “The Marshall Mathers LP,” racked up 1.7 million units in its debut week.… Read more »

Britney Avoids Vice, Justin Talk, Anything New At Sin City Tour Opener – Review

In the city of sin, Britney Spears behaved. There was no dissing of Justin Timberlake during the opening night of the second leg of the Dream Within a Dream Tour. No cigarette smoking. No… whatever vice the rumor mills have her doing this week. Things may have changed in Britney’s well-chronicled life since the last time we saw her onstage – and that’s only if you believe the gossip – but there were no signs of it Friday at Mandalay Bay. The 20-year-old headliner was the same pop princess she was at 19. Nearly every part of Spears’ 90-minute show… Read more »

Lars Ulrich's Record Label Sees Red, Fades To Black

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich may have a shining future as an art dealer, having recently unloaded five paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat for millions of dollars apiece, but maybe he should reconsider his side career as an A&R man. During an online chat last week on the band’s Web site, Ulrich confirmed that he had folded his record label, the Music Company, an imprint distributed through Elektra. One band Ulrich signed, Systematic, will find a new home at Elektra. Systematic’s debut, Somewhere in Between, has sold almost 70,000 copies since its release in May 2000. The drummer’s other acts, which fared… Read more »

Red Hot Chili Peppers' New Single About Joy, Car Crashes, Playing Dice

To truly enjoy basking in the light, it’s important to grasp what it’s like to be alone in the dark. The Red Hot Chili Peppers know this. Having endured drug addiction and crumbling relationships as well as fame and great wealth, they’ve developed a respect for the dynamic between yin and yang, pleasure and pain, elation and despondency. And on their new album, By the Way, which comes out July 9, the band continues to explore the dynamic between such polar opposites. While half of the album reflects a fun-loving, enthusiastic vibe, the disc is equally weighted with darker and… Read more »

What many Hole fans have assumed for years was made official Thursday (May 23) with a statement from founding members Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson that the band is over. The flamboyant singer and her longtime bandmate announced they will no longer record or tour together as Hole, though they will work together to promote future Hole catalog releases. “I will always treasure the time we played together,” Love said in the statement. “Eric has been an important part of my family for over 10 years and he’ll continue to be a part of my life.” Added Erlandson, “We’re incredibly… Read more »

Stone Temple Pilots Saddle Up With Rhinestone Cowboy

The thought of anyone from block rockers Stone Temple Pilots working with Rhinestone Cowboy Glen Campbell might at first seem as absurd as porn star Jenna Jameson advocating abstinence. On further examination, it doesn’t seem so bizarre. STP bassist and songwriter Robert DeLeo has spoken in interviews about his love for the country-pop performed by Johnny Cash, Jimmy Webb and especially Campbell. And last year, Campbell’s budding musician son Cal introduced his dad to the music of the Pilots. Soon after one of Campbell’s Los Angeles shows, the band went backstage and met the legendary singer/songwriter. They all got along… Read more »
