Sum 41 Video Skit Deemed Unsuitable For Children

While Sum 41 were on tour with Good Charlotte last week, the show made the local news. The report, however, could have been a little more positive. Under the banner “Concert Concerns,” a segment ran on the local news in New Orleans that slammed Sum 41 for the violence in the short film the band plays before their set. The clip shows drummer Stevo, decked out in the dorkiest basketball uniform he could find – complete with knee-high socks, wristbands, short-shorts and sports goggles – challenging a demurely dressed bassist Cone to a game of hoops. Cone, of course, righteously… Read more »

'Indie' Record Labels Say Big Firms Stifle Industry

London – When the curtain went up on MTV’s Europe Awards in Rome on Thursday, only one of the performers was signed to an independent record label. And at European pop music’s annual showcase event where fans vote for their favorites either online or by mobile phone, not only were the majority of acts from the United States, but all major prizes went to Americans. The independent record industry says the business has been taken over by four mega-companies that are helping to entrench American cultural “hegemony” across the music world. “The record business is stacked in favor of the… Read more »

Blink-182 Celebrate Longevity With '80s-Sounding 'Always'

It’s fitting that the title of the new Blink-182 single connotes permanence. The release of “Always” has given the band’s year-old untitled album unprecedented longevity. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had four singles,” singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge explained. “[This album] is like ‘The Little Engine That Could.’ We even talked about a fifth single. We’ve never done this before. It is kind of weird that we’re still around.” Since the band’s sixth album dropped last November, it’s yielded the singles “Feeling This,” “I Miss You,” “Down” and “Always,” which is expected to surface at radio next week. Should there be… Read more »

Hoobastank Thanks TV for Tripling Audience

Cleveland – In pinpointing the platinum success of Hoobastank’s sophomore Island album, “The Reason,” lead singer Doug Robb tells Billboard the high-profile inclusion of the album’s title track on last-season episodes of “Friends” and “The O.C.” proved pivotal in breaking the band to new listeners. “That was probably the single largest reason why the audience basically tripled,” says Robb. “Because once it hit top 40 or pop radio, which is something that we were really hesitant about because we’re not really a pop band, the success of those formats really just opened doors to a lot of new fans. And… Read more »
