MTV Taking VMA Awards Bash to Vegas

The MTV Video Music Awards are synonymous with debauchery, so it makes sense that the annual event has found a new home in Sin City – Las Vegas. After broadcasting from New York last year, the awards will air live from the Palms Casino Resort on Sept. 9. But the network promises the awards show will not be a one-day offering but a three-day bash with several events leading up to the big night. “We really want to showcase a lot of new talent … and have performances all around town, really driving into the show on Sunday,” the show’s… Read more »

Never Say Die: Ozzy Wants to Make Another Sabbath LP

The one thing fans will immediately notice about Ozzy Osbourne’s forthcoming LP Black Rain is that it’s drenched in some of the heaviest riffage to grace one of the Prince of Darkness’ solo outings – thanks, in large part, to Ozzy’s longtime guitarist, the Jack Daniel’s-chugging Zakk Wylde. According to Osbourne, there were times during the tracking of the album when he wondered whether the songs were too abrasive. But you see, Ozzy’s got this personal rule about making music. “If you’re heavy, don’t try to be f—ing light,” he explained. Wise words from a man whose stamp on the… Read more »

Britney's Back!

SAN DIEGO – Most fans who held coveted tickets to Britney Spears’ first show in three years entered the House of Blues on Tuesday with the simplest of hopes – that the recently rehabbed pop star would be there with them. They heard all the rumors. They woke up to erroneous claims by gossip Web sites and local media that the not-so-secret show – billed as the M+M’s – was off. Even when Britney’s tour bus arrived at the venue, there was still the chance that she might pull the plug at the last minute, as she did at an… Read more »

Reunited Rage Against The Machine Closes Coachella

Rage Against The Machine played its first show in seven years last night (April 29) to close the 2007 edition of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The foursome tore into staples like “Testify,” “Bulls on Parade,” “People of the Sun” and “Guerrilla Radio” to one of the largest main stage crowds in the event’s history. Guitarist Tom Morello was in particularly blazing form on “Know Your Enemy,” and the band grooved in lockstep throughout, as if no time had passed since it was last active. Rage has thus far only scheduled four other shows in… Read more »

Criminalising the consumer – Where digital rights went wrong

Is it legal to make a copy of that DVD you’ve just bought so the family can watch it around the home or in the car? In one of the most watched copyright cases in recent years, a judge in northern California ruled last month that copying DVDs for personal use was legal, given the terms of the industry’s licence and the way the copies were made. The wider implication of the ruling remains clouded–not least because the DVD Copy Control Association, the loser in the case, has 60 days to appeal. But whatever the video industry may like to… Read more »

The Raconteurs Working Hard on Second Album

The Raconteurs are planning to release their second album next year if things go to plan. Fronted by Jack White of the White Stripes and Brendan Benson, alongside Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of The Greenhornes, the retro-tinged rockers hit critical acclaim last year with “Broken Boy Soldiers”, which was backed by a year-long tour. Speaking to Billboard this week, Jack White reveals the band aren’t resting on their laurels, and have 12 tracks already written for sessions at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. “We don’t know if were going to finish but we wanted to get everything down before we… Read more »

Yahoo, Gracenote Launch Lyrics Service

Yahoo Inc. and digital media company Gracenote launched an online lyrics service on Tuesday, the first industry-backed effort in a market dominated by unauthorized, rogue Web sites. Song lyrics are among the top searches performed on the Web, but consumers have largely relied on unlicensed sources that often provide inaccurate and incomplete lyrics and do not compensate composers for their work. “Finally, a free, legal and definitive way to settle a bet with the guy sitting next to you at the bar who is certain the Ramones’ most famous anthem declares, ‘I wanna piece of bacon,”‘ said Ian Rogers, general… Read more »

Punk icon Iggy Pop turns 60, dives off stage

Iggy Pop marked his 60th birthday on Saturday just like any other respectable senior citizen would. The eerily athletic “Godfather of Punk” stripped down to a tight pair of blue jeans and dived off the stage into the arms of his adoring fans during a concert in San Francisco with his reunited band the Stooges. Towards the end of the 80-minute show, the crowd at the Warfield theater sang along as his bandmates struck up “Happy Birthday,” and Pop was surprised as balloons bearing his image dropped from the ceiling. A fan also handed him a white T-shirt inscribed “Birthday… Read more »

D.C. funk master Brown readies 1st album in decade

The untimely death in 1996 of 33-year-old pop/jazz singer Eva Cassidy struck a deep chord with Chuck Brown. Washington, D.C.’s godfather of go-go had teamed with Cassidy on the 1995 release “The Other Side.” “After we lost her, I didn’t want to do anymore studio work,” Brown said. But cajoling from songwriter/producer Chucky Thompson and business manager Tom Goldfogle changed Brown’s tune. “We’re About the Business” (due April 24 from Raw Venture) is the musician’s first set of primarily original material since Cassidy’s death. That’s not all. Rapper Eve samples his No. 31 1974 R&B hit “Blow Your Whistle” on… Read more »
