Britney Spears invites superfans to Times Square Circus

If you’ve ever dreamed of running away and joining the circus, December 1 is your night. Assuming, that is, you’re near New York’s Times Square and you are a Britney Spears superfan. A post on Brit’s MySpace page invites her supporters to be part of “Britney’s Greatest Fan Contest & Birthday Celebration,” asking them to congregate outside the Virgin Megastore in Times Square to celebrate the release of Circus, which hits stores December 2. At the event, Britney will be looking for her biggest fan, so contestants are being encouraged to “sing, dance, imitate or even profess their love for… Read more »

Chris Brown, Kanye West, Lil Wayne big winners at AMAs

At the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 23), Miley Cyrus, celebrating her 16th birthday, broke character a bit, performing a saucy, seductive version of her new single, “Fly on the Wall”; Mariah Carey delivered a riveting rendition of “I Stay in Love”; and a barely lucid Scott Weiland ironically introduced Pink’s performance of “Sober,” calling her “one of the greatest artists of our time.” Later, Pink even joined Sarah McLachlan for a duet on “Angel.” The New Kids on the Block and Christina Aguilera both performed medleys of their most beloved tunes. Justin Timberlake gave us a lesson on… Read more »

Blink-182 Reunion in the Cards?

Last week, at the mtvU Woodie Awards, former Blink-182er (and current member of +44) Mark Hoppus spoke about his best friend and bandmate Travis Barker, who is recovering from second-and-third degree burns suffered in a September 19 plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured DJ AM. And this week, Hoppus kept on talking – er, blogging – only this time it wasn’t just about about Barker, but former Blink bandmate Tom DeLonge, too. Seems that, for the first time since Blink went on “indefinite hiatus” in February 2005, all three members have been spending time together … which,… Read more »

Ashlee Simpson, Pete Wentz Welcome Baby Boy

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson welcomed a son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, into the world late Thursday night. Little Bronx weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces, according to a statement from the couple’s publicist. “Ashlee, Pete and baby Bronx are all healthy and happy,” the statement read, “and thank everyone for their well wishes!” He’s the first child for both … and his birth was, shall we say, rather anticipated. Several reports had Simpson going into labor last weekend, and though that information proved to be incorrect, Simpson was so close to delivering that Wentz opted to stay with her… Read more »

Obama Wins: Change is Here

Americans have spoken, and their collective voice has summoned for change. After years of ads, infomercials, primaries, debates and an online campaign that generated a groundswell of support among the nation’s disaffected youth, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has defeated the Republican pick for president, Arizona Senator John McCain. The junior senator from the state of Illinois announced his candidacy 22 months ago, beginning his historic, barrier-busting bid for the nation’s highest office. CNN called the election for Obama at 11 p.m. ET, as the polls closed on the West Coast. He will be America’s 44th president. Obama is projected… Read more »

Block the Vote: GOP's Campaign to Deter New Voters

These days, the old west rail hub of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is little more than a dusty economic dead zone amid a boneyard of bare mesas. In national elections, the town overwhelmingly votes Democratic: More than 80 percent of all residents are Hispanic, and one in four lives below the poverty line. On February 5th, the day of the Super Tuesday caucus, a school-bus driver named Paul Maez arrived at his local polling station to cast his ballot. To his surprise, Maez found that his name had vanished from the list of registered voters, thanks to a statewide effort… Read more »

Voters 'Purged' From Voter Rolls

College senior Kyla Berry was looking forward to voting in her first presidential election, even carrying her voter registration card in her wallet. “Vote suppression is real. It does sometimes happen,” said Daniel P. Tokaji, a law professor at Ohio State University. But about two weeks ago, Berry got disturbing news from local election officials. “This office has received notification from the state of Georgia indicating that you are not a citizen of the United States and therefore, not eligible to vote,” a letter from the Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections said. But Berry is a U.S. citizen,… Read more »

Apple Joins Fight Against Gay Marriage Ban

Apple Inc. announced Friday it is contributing $100,000 to the campaign against California’s Proposition 8, which would outlaw same-sex marriage in the state. In a statement posted on its Web site, the company, based in Cupertino, Calif., called marriage a fundamental right. “Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation,” the statement said. With the political donation and the statement, Apple joins Google in opposing Proposition… Read more »

Britney Spears Still Queen of Pop

Britney Spears' new single "Womanizer" made a record-breaking leap to top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on Wednesday, underscoring her musical comeback after making headlines with her personal woes. Billboard said the song, the first from a new Spears album due for release in December, jumped from No.96 to No.1 in the past week and returned Spears to the top of the list for the first time since her 1999 debut single "Baby One More Time." "Womanizer" is also No. 1 on iTunes charts in Canada, France, Spain and Sweden, Spears' record company Jive said. Billboard said the… Read more »

Rolling Stone Ends Trademark Oversize Format

Rolling Stone magazine is shrinking with the times. After more than four decades of standing out with a larger format than other magazines, it will step back and look like everyone else starting with the Oct. 30 issue, due out this week. The adoption of a standard format could boost single-copy sales and reduce production costs for advertising inserts such as scent strips and tear-out postcards. The magazine says any cost savings, though, will be offset by the inclusion of more pages and the shift to thicker, glossier paper. Like other devoted readers, Eddie Ward, 35, said he will miss… Read more »
