The tension is palpable at Universal Studios as USA Networks CEO Barry Diller considers merging his media empire with the studio’s Vivendi Universal parent. “All we know for sure is that Barry Diller is going to be a helluva lot richer a week from now,” said one senior studio executive who was about to attend the Universal Christmas Party. Vivendi Universal, seeking an elusive U.S. distribution outlet for its array of television and film assets, said on Tuesday it was in talks to buy the entertainment assets of USA, which is about 40%-owned by the French company. Whatever Diller does,… Read more »

New Order Quit Bickering, Start Rocking On Get Ready

First album together in eight years finds band returning to its roots. For many years over the past two decades, New Order crafted cynical synth-pop that radiated with alternative dancefloor chic. But on Get Ready, the band’s first record together in eight years, New Order have done something they haven’t tried since their pre-Order days. They’ve rocked out. While the album still shimmers and shivers with electronic textures, it’s anchored by organic instrumentation and galvanic grooves. “60 Miles an Hour,” Get Ready’s second single, sounds like a beefier spinoff of the band’s hit “Blue Monday,” and “Rock the Shack” is… Read more »

Fear that Cuban-American protesters would threaten the safety of guests at the Latin Grammys next month prompted organizers to pull the event from Miami at the last minute and move it to Los Angeles. The move dealt a blow to Miami officials who had been lobbying hard to bring the Latin Grammys to the city this year. The show was expected to pump an estimated $35 million into the area economy. Michael Greene, president and chief executive of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the Latin Recording Academy, made the announcement Monday after Miami officials agreed to… Read more »

Jay-Z, Jadakiss Say Beef Good, Violence Bad

“What’s beef?” the Notorious B.I.G. asked on his song of the same title. “Beef is when your moms ain’t safe up in the streets.” There’s no need for rappers’ mothers to put on the Kevlar just yet, but their MC sons are spewing a lot of venom at each other these days. Jadakiss has been beefing with Beanie Sigel. Sigel has made it clear he’s not feeling DMX. DMX may have it in for Jay-Z; Nas definitely does. Nas is also going at it with Sigel, Cormega, Freeway and Memphis Bleek. Jadakiss swears it’s mostly hype. “The industry ain’t like… Read more »

All you have to do is let him know you’re not an L.A. Lakers fan. “How can you not like the… Read more »

Stones' Svengali Recounts Street Fighting Days

Long before gun-toting rap stars roamed America, the first manager of the Rolling Stones was terrorizing “Swinging” London, throwing errant journalists out of windows and others off bridges. Accompanied by a thuggish bodyguard, teenage pop Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham was said to be quite the rogue 40 years ago: Sporting a cape, he would careen around the city in his Mini Cooper, speakers blaring from the roof of the tiny car. This is not all completely true – especially the bit about the cape – but the anecdotes and rumors metamorphosed into “facts” over the years, a consequence of the… Read more »
