Music Labels Step Up Internet Piracy Hunt

The embattled music industry disclosed plans Wednesday for an unprecedented escalation in its fight against Internet piracy, threatening to sue hundreds of individual computer users who illegally share music files online. The Recording Industry Association of America, citing significant sales declines, said it will begin Thursday to search Internet file-sharing networks to identify music fans who offer “substantial” collections of MP3 song files for downloading. It expects to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within eight to 10 weeks. Executives for the RIAA, the Washington-based lobbying group that represents major labels, would not say how many songs… Read more »

Eminem's Feuds Caught on Tape

The way things are shaking out, Eminem will go down in history as starting more feuds than Richard Dawson. Last week the rapper’s latest battle, pitting his Shady Records camp against Ja Rule and Murder Inc., took center stage at Giants Stadium during Summer Jam, the annual hip-hop fest thrown by Big Apple radio’s Hot 97. Em protégé 50 Cent started his set with several Ja digs accompanied by a video display. Then Eminem delivered da bomb, performing the blistering Ja Rule-dissing salvos “Doe Ray Me” with D12 and “Hail Mary” with 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes. But don’t start… Read more »

Web Song Swap Cos. Not Liable for Piracy

Two companies behind services for sharing music and movies over the Internet are not to blame for any illegal copying conducted by the services’ users, a federal judge ruled Friday. The 34-page ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson was a major blow to recording companies and movie studios, which have been aggressively filing lawsuits and pushing new laws to stem the illegal copying and distribution of their copyright works. The decision, if it survives appeal, essentially absolves Grokster Ltd. and StreamCast Networks Inc. of liability. Grokster distributes file-sharing software by that name, and StreamCast distributes Morpheus. “It’s a… Read more »

Limp Bizkit On Anti-War Celebrities Boycott List

A columnist at the New York Post has run an article called “Don’t Aid These Saddam Lovers” in an attempt to start a boycott against celebrities who have made their anti-war feelings known. Richard Johnson-who usually writes gossip for the tabloid-style newspaper-has apparently branched out into political commentary, and urges his readers to stop supporting movies, television shows, concerts, and albums by artists Johnson deems unpatriotic. Among the targeted stars are Fred Durst and his band, Limp Bizkit-whose fans, Johnson implies, are too stupid to even “know what Iraq is”-as well as Samuel L. Jackson (called a “drone” in the… Read more »

Limp Bizkit Changes Name to 'limpbizkit'

It looks like capitalization and spacing is no good any more for Fred Durst. He posted a message on Limp Bizkit’s Web site saying the band will now be known as limpbizkit with no capitals and no space between words. He gives no reason for the change. He seems to like playing around with words lately, given the changes he makes to the new album’s title. This week he said it would not be called “Bipolar” but instead “Fetus More.” He’s changed his mind again and now he’s calling it “The Search for Teddy Swoes.” Durst promises “it will all… Read more »

Eminem Will Not Perform At The Oscars

Rapper-actor Eminem will not perform his Oscar-nominated hit, “Lose Yourself,” at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony. Dennis Dennehy of Interscope Records told USA Today, “He’ll still be on vacation during the Academy Awards.” Oscar-show producer Gil Cates, who usually attempts to persuade all the artists nominated for best original song to perform, explained how he might work out the wrinkle. “There’s no rule that the nominees have to sing or that you even have to include all of the numbers in the show,” Cates says. “I could do a medley or no songs at all….It’s a very fluid show with… Read more »

Who's Been Hooking Up With Britney?

If the variety of producers she’s working with is any indication, Britney Spears’ next record will be her most adventurous yet. Sure, mainstays Rodney Jerkins and the Neptunes are again logging time with the pop princess, but she has also recorded with Ashanti producer 7 Aurelius and the Matrix, the production team behind Avril Lavigne’s hit singles. And don’t forget Fred Durst. Both 7, who also worked on the latest Tupac album, and the Matrix have done three tracks with Spears and are hoping to do more. “I’m doing something for her, something really ridiculous. [A] record I’m going to… Read more »

Vignettes From the Grammy Awards

Despite concerns that the Grammy Awards would become a forum for anti-war sentiment, most political messages were muted. “NO WAR” was written in silver letters on Sheryl Crow’s guitar strap as she performed, although her hair usually covered up most of the “NO.” Bonnie Raitt slipped in a four-word message, “let’s build some peace,” before handing out an award. And No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani wore a halter top emblazoned with the word, “love,” and combat fatigue hot pants. “I hope we all are in agreeance that this war should go away as soon as possible,” said Limp Bizkit lead singer… Read more »

Simon Relishes Nod 35 Years After Mistake

Paul Simon said he’s celebrating his new chance at an Oscar after a paperwork mistake likely kept his song “Mrs. Robinson” out of the competition 35 years ago. The singer-songwriter received his first Academy Award nomination Tuesday for “Father and Daughter,” from the animated “The Wild Thornberrys Movie.” He said many people erroneously believe he was nominated for “Mrs. Robinson,” which he and former collaborator Art Garfunkel sang in 1967’s “The Graduate.” “We forgot to fill in the forms,” Simon acknowledged with a laugh. “You know, it was the ’60s. We just weren’t paying attention. We went along our way… Read more »
