Onyx Pay Homage To Fallen MCs, Gangsta Females On Part 2

Many artists and fans alike cite a lack of creativity for the recent glut of uninspired rap albums. Onyx blame something else: lack of energy. The bald-headed trio who exploded onto the hip-hop scene nearly a decade ago with smash singles “Throw Ya Gunz” and “Slam” from their riotous debut album, 1993’s Bacdaf-up, hope to inject the same type of kinetic energy into the rap game as they did 10 years ago. “Right now the game is fabricated with a lot of MCs that really don’t focus on a lot of energy in the streets,” said Fredro Starr, who is… Read more »

When Joey Fatone needed a break from ‘NSYNC, he decided a wedding would be nice. Nah, the singer didn’t tie the knot – he took on a role in the independent film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” which hits theaters April 14. “Obviously [‘NSYNC] can get old or tiring after a while and you’re like, ‘I want little bit of a change,’ ” Fatone said at a screening of the movie last week. “[So you] go do a movie. Be a character. Be nutty. Be silly. Whatever the case may be. And then you’re like, ‘OK, well, now I can… Read more »

Kurt Cobain Diaries Expected In Stores This Fall

Avoiding what was expected to be an intense bidding war over Kurt Cobain’s journals, a New York imprint snapped up the world publishing rights on Monday for a seven-figure sum. Publishers who got an advance look at the diaries were told to submit their bids by 11 a.m. on Monday, but the auction was called off around 10 a.m. after a deal was struck with Riverhead Books, a division of Penguin Putnam. “The journals are an intimate, unadulterated portrait of an artist of great influence,” Riverhead’s Julie Grau, who will be the project’s editor, said in a statement released Tuesday… Read more »

Just days after their third, self-titled record is released later this month, Smash Mouth will start recording another one. No, they’re not taking a digital studio on the road and jamming during down time, they’re bringing producer Eric Valentine out with them to work on a live album, which they hope to release by this time next year. “It’s not that easy to make a live record, because you’ve really gotta be on your game,” vocalist Steve Harwell said recently. “But now the shows are good enough to where we can record them and they’ll sound really good.” The disc… Read more »

Ticket sales out of tune for mid-level acts

While concert ticket sales have begun to rebound for top-level acts since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, it’s the medium-range and niche bands that have felt the pinch and are likely to suffer further, industry insiders said. Ticket sales for such mainstream acts as Madonna, U2, Elton John, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffett continue to be strong, while tours catering to a niche teen demographic are not selling as well. Notable examples, according to sources, include the Family Values Tour, featuring Linkin Park, Staind and Stone Temple Pilots, and the Pledge of Allegiance tour, which… Read more »

Ben Folds thrives without Five – Review

A spirited performance and a clear delineation of material Monday helped Ben Folds re-establish himself – and prove the viability of a solo career – without the two musicians who constituted the “Five” in his old band. Songs from the new album “Rockin’ the Suburbs” dominated the first hour of music, save for the tragically comical “Karaoke Superstar,” and after a quick break, Folds took the stage solo for 25 minutes of earlier tunes until joined again by the band for “Song for the Dumped.” Folds, on record and in concert, has proven himself quite proficient with no numbers after… Read more »

Noel Looks Back Without Anger on a Decade of Oasis

Bust-ups, divorce and family feuds have kept British rock band Oasis and the battling Gallagher brothers in the news as much as their music.
