Record Labels Lag In Cleanup Of Violence-Report

A new federal report singles out the recording industry for doing virtually nothing to stop marketing violent materials to children, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. The Federal Trade Commission report, due out Tuesday, finds that the film and video game industries have made some progress but have not yet eliminated the problem, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the situation. The “snapshot” report, requested by staff members of the Senate Commerce Committee, will provide a preliminary review of the marketing practices of the film, movie and recording industries. It will be the first of two follow-ups to a… Read more »

Michael Jackson Parts Ways With Management Company

Pop icon Michael Jackson, who has a solo album in the works and a reunion concert with his brothers planned for this fall, has severed ties with his powerhouse management company, both parties said Thursday. The Firm, which has represented Jackson’s solo interests for the past year and a half, parted ways with the Gloved One this week. “All I can say is that it didn’t work out,” Jackson publicist Cheri Fein told Reuters. Both she and The Firm declined to give any specific reasons for the separation. But the music news Web site Hits Daily Double quoted one source… Read more »

In the midst of a yearlong hiatus from the road, veteran guitarist and bandleader Carlos Santana has recorded a new song with reclusive pop star Michael Jackson. “I was very honored that he called on me to work with him, and I love the song,” Santana said. “He gave me a call last week, and he was really happy with it.” A Jackson spokesperson confirmed that the track is intended for the long-awaited follow-up to 1991’s Dangerous, his last studio LP of all-new material. Jackson announced Monday that he will reunite with his brothers as the Jackson 5 and perform… Read more »

Hanson, Sweet Go Underneath

Their embraceable debut (1997’s Middle of Nowhere, featuring the Number One single “MMMBop”) sold millions of copies and established Hanson as TRL’s preeminent poster-teens. The grittier follow-up (2000’s This Time Around) alienated bubblegum-dependent younger fans and has yet to go platinum in the states. Now the brothers Hanson – Isaac, Taylor and Zac – are hard at work on a record they hope will marry the success of one to the punchy feel of the other and in the process show the world what they’ve know all along: Hanson are a hard-working, musically gifted and educated rock band. Sessions for… Read more »

‘NSync was the top musical act at the seventh annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards Tuesday (April 10) night at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium, winning Favorite CD (No Strings Attached), Favorite Single (“Bye, Bye, Bye”), and Favorite Pop Group. The major music categories were mostly split, however, with a poodle-haired Christina Aguilera snagging Favorite Female Artist, Eminem taking Favorite Male Artist, and Destiny’s Child walking off with Favorite Group of the Year. Pink and Nelly were the Favorite New Artists. The most movie-related wins were reaped by Charlie’s Angels with three (plus one for cast member Lucy Liu in Shanghai Noon). Kate Hudson’s… Read more »

Aaron Carter: Life Of A 13-Year-Old Pop Star

Yes, his brother is the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter. But that doesn’t mean 13-year-old Aaron Carter shows him a great deal of respect. “When they’re asleep, my brother and my manager, I put shaving cream in their hands and tickle their nose and they smash it into their faces,” says the younger Carter. “I know how to get away Ö fast.” Like his elder sibling, however, Carter is becoming well acquainted with the pop charts and radio playlists. After first finding international success in 1999, his first U.S. release – last fall’s relentlessly cheerful Aaron’s Party (Come Get It) –… Read more »

Labels Ask Judge To Make Napster Reverse Its Filtering Approach

RIAA lawyers say service should switch to a method in which permission would be sought in advance for every file. Napster has “flagrantly and intentionally” failed to filter out copyrighted songs, music industry lawyers said Tuesday (March 27), asking a judge to force the file-sharing service to switch to a “filter-in” method in which only specifically authorized songs would be available. In a “filter-in” system, Napster would have to start by banning everything, and then allow in songs that labels and artists tell them are approved for sharing – the opposite of the method Napster currently uses, where songs are… Read more »

Hanson Records With Sweet For Next LP

They took a bit of a break to hang out at this year’s South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, but Isaac and Taylor Hanson are hard at work, with brother Zac, on their third major-label studio album, which they hope to have out by the fall. “I’m really excited about the songs we’re writing,” says Taylor. “It’s actually moving more and more towards kind of power pop stuff – The Cars, The Raspberries, the Jayhawks, that kind of stuff. I started to hear some of that and thought, ‘This is where the band is moving.’” Isaac, meanwhile, describes the… Read more »
