Strokes Say No Thanks To Big-Name Producers, Directors

The Strokes may be the “it” band of the moment, but don’t expect them to be lining up studio sessions with “it” producers like Glen Ballard or the Neptunes. When the New York garage-rockers begin recording their second album later this summer, Is This It producer Gordon Raphael will again be behind the boards. “It’s not gonna be like, ‘Oh, now that we’re successful, we’re gonna work with all these super-producer guys that are going to make us a top-selling hit,’ ” singer Julian Casablancas said backstage at Saturday’s KROQ Weenie Roast. “That’s never been the goal for us. We… Read more »

SR-71 Spy A Better Day 'Tomorrow'

In an attempt to explain the evolution from SR-71’s major-label debut to their upcoming release, singer Mitch Allan suggested a similarity to the progression from the Beatles’ Revolver to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Then he caught himself. “Not to compare our albums to those albums,” Allan said. “Maybe it’s more like the difference between Sugar Ray’s first and second albums.” It may not be Sgt. Pepper’s, but Allan couldn’t be happier about SR-71’s Tomorrow, which abandons the pop-punk focus of 2000’s Now You See the Inside for a more anthem-rock approach. “When people hear the first single they’re… Read more »

Michael Jackson, Al Sharpton, Johnnie Cochran Take On Labels

Michael Jackson addressed his rumored dispute with Sony Music for the first time Wednesday when he aligned himself with a new artist-rights initiative and released a statement condemning the music industry and his label. At a New York press conference Jackson was named the first member of a coalition formed by the Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Johnnie Cochran to investigate whether record companies are financially exploiting artists. “Record companies have to start treating their artists with respect, honor, and financial justice,” Jackson said in a statement. “Therefore, I am proud to join this coalition which represents all artists.” The… Read more »

Music Fans Find Dearth Of Quality – Feature

Perhaps the most nebulous whine in fandom concerns a perceived dearth of good music. Roughly 27,000 titles are dumped into the marketplace annually, yet many consumers, particularly casual or older fans less prone to rooting out new sounds, grumble about a shortage and pine for the days of plenty. The complaint: Record labels sign only what they hope will sell, jumping on the latest bandwagon and flooding the market with sound-alikes. Everything radio and MTV plays sounds as if it fell off the same assembly line. Record companies focus on radio-friendly and videogenic acts to the exclusion of worthy mavericks… Read more »

Default Planning Ballad As Third Single

While Default currently has no shortage of hit singles with both “Wasting My Time” and “Deny” grabbing precious airplay, the group is already planning the third track to be featured from its debut album, The Fallout. The band will likely release the ballad, “Live A Lie,” next-that is, if it performs well back home in Canada first. Default frontman Dallas Smith said-so far, so good. “We just released ‘Live A Lie’ in Canada so we’re gonna see how that one does. Right now it’s getting a great reaction just in Vancouver, because we were home last week and we were… Read more »

The Strokes Announce Weezer Dates

The Strokes have announced the five dates that they will open for Weezer. The band will open for Rivers Cuomo and crew starting July 15 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Opening all of Weezer’s dates are Dashboard Confessional and Sparta. While already extremely popular in the U.K., the Strokes’ success at home in the U.S. also continues to expand, if at a slower pace. Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture said, “We’re not looking to fit in and just the way things have been going now, it’s just getting people excited and into what we’re doing. That’s basically how it’s been from the… Read more »

Crazy Town Happy To Not Produce Album

Crazy Town frontman Epic Mazur says it’s a “big relief” to be working with producer Howard Benson on its second album, Nothing Comes From Nowhere. Mazur shared production credits with Josh Abraham on the L.A. band’s 1999 Columbia Records debut, The Gift Of Game, and he said that this time around he’s into “doing whatever [Howard] says.” Mazur said, “We weren’t so concerned about somebody coming in and making the record sound cool, but somebody to come in and really interface with us on our songs and our melodies and arrangements. Because if we can take ’em so far on… Read more »

Springsteen, E Street Band On The Rise After 18 Years

A good 18 years have passed since Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded their last studio record, Born in the U.S.A. Now, following a hugely successful 2000 concert reunion, the group is about to release a new studio disc called The Rising. In their attempt to bridge all those fallow years with a single release they also appear to be going for a contemporary sound, hiring producer Brendan O’Brien, who is best known for working with groups like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine. The Rising comes out July 30 and features 14 new… Read more »

MTV Movie Awards Maintain Comic Vibe

Irreverent and bordering on insolent, the MTV Movie Awards have built a following over the past decade by mocking Hollywood as much as celebrating it. Best Villain? Best Kiss? Best Fight? Lifetime achievement awards for Chewbacca from “Star Wars,” and for cameo character actor Clint Howard, the squinty-eyed little brother of director Ron Howard? Such are the honors bestowed at the MTV Movie Awards, which in its 11th year comes not to praise cinema but to parody it. This year’s ceremony takes place Saturday and will be broadcast Thursday (June 6). “We’re always looking to make people laugh. That’s more… Read more »
