Pearl Jam CD Deals With Mortality

Eddie Vedder has found plenty of material in mortality over the years. His band, Pearl Jam, was born of a heroin overdose more than a decade ago. Rival songwriter Kurt Cobain of Nirvana committed suicide while at the height of popularity. Two of Pearl Jam’s biggest hits, “Jeremy” and “Last Kiss,” deal with teen death. Now comes renewal, an appropriate topic as the lead singer and his bandmates re-emerge from their most proximate shock: the deaths of nine fans trampled during the 2000 Roskilde festival in Denmark. “Riot Act,” released Nov. 12, is Pearl Jam’s first studio album since the… Read more »

Justincase Inspired by Many Artists

When the teen rock band justincase went on the road to promote their self-titled CD on the Maverick label, they took their mother with them. That’s not surprising. The three Tosco siblings – Justin (vocals, guitar), Nick (drums) and Hannahcome from a close-knit family, where music is an important part of their life. “They were exposed to music from the time they were in diapers,” says their father, John Tosco, a guitar teacher who’s prominent on the local music scene. “Music was part of their upbringing.” Around the time Justin was born, John and his wife, Holly, began inviting local… Read more »

Sum 41 Sober Up On Does This Look Infected?

When Sum 41 wrote last year’s All Killer No Filler, the bandmembers were all still in high school. Toilet-dunking bullies, drinking buddies, unrequited puppy love, impish practical jokes and weekend parties were what their lives consisted of, so that’s what the sang about. But now they’ve toured the world, experienced some real-life trauma and tapped into current events (at least a little bit), so the boys in the band – singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley, guitarist Dave Baksh, bassist Cone and drummer Steve Jocz – are in a slightly different place, and as a result they’re penning some harder, more sobering songs.… Read more »

New Found Glory, Something Corporate, Finch Energize DC – Review

The lyrics to the song “This Is My Life Story” by MXPX run through my head as I hopelessly scramble to the very back of the line. I left later than I had hoped, got caught up in D.C. traffic, and arrived about 5 minutes before doors were scheduled to open. Once inside, I rush to get as close to the stage as I possible. While mashed between about five teeny boppers and their “boyfriends,” anticipation runs through my bones as I eagerly await the first performance. First up is Further Seems Forever. I was a little skeptical about this… Read more »

Lopez, Affleck Coy on Wedding Plans

Are they or aren’t they? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck won’t say, but it sure looks like they’re engaged. The couple, who’ve been photographed kissing everywhere over the past few months, have been coy about whether they’re getting married. People magazine, quoting friends and sources, reports in its Nov. 18 issue that they plan to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day. The marriage would be the third for Lopez, 32, and the first for Affleck, 30. Lopez’s publicist, Alan Nierob, declined to comment on the report Thursday. Affleck’s publicist didn’t immediately return a phone call. The singer-actress has been wearing… Read more »

Sharon Osbourne Rethinks MTV Show

If she had to do it over again, Sharon Osbourne says she wouldn’t have invited MTV’s cameras into her home. At least, that’s what the cancer-stricken matriarch of television’s favorite dysfunctional family told ABC’s Barbara Walters when she talked to her earlier this fall. Osbourne said, in an interview to air on a special “20/20” edition Wednesday, that she’s calling it quits after an upcoming, 10-episode season is through. “We can’t do it anymore,” she said. When ABC released those quotes on Monday, an obviously concerned MTV President Van Toffler called Osbourne. He said she told him: “You know you… Read more »

Injuries at Minn. Bow Wow Concert

Several concert-goers suffered minor injuries Saturday night when a railing gave way at the Target Center during a performance by the rap artist Bow Wow. About 10 people were taken by ambulance for treatment, said Reid Katzung, director of operations. The most serious complaints appeared to be of lower leg pain and of back pain, he said. Four people were being treated for minor injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center late Saturday, a nursing supervisor said. The railing – about 12 feet long and 5 feet off the arena floor – gave way as fans pressed forward when Bow Wow… Read more »

Feds to Decide on Digital Radio

For generations, radio listeners have contended with static. That may be about to change if backers of digital radio have their way. The technology they want to roll out within a year promises custom news and information at the touch of a button, CD-quality sound for FM broadcasts and an end to AM’s hiss, crackle and pop. The Federal Communications Commission is to decide Thursday whether to allow radio stations to broadcast digital signals and how they should do it. Digital radio could be the biggest update to the medium since the debut of FM in the 1940s, said Ken… Read more »
