Napster Software Will ID Sound


The latest version of Napster’s file-swapping software includes technology that can identify songs by sound, not just their names, the company said Monday. In a posting on its Web site, the company said so-called sound fingerprinting will help the company comply with a federal judge’s order to block the free exchange of copyrighted songs and to add yet-to-be-announced features. Since March, Napster has been excluding copyright songs based on file names, which can vary substantially from user to user. Puffy Combs Acquitted; Shyne Guilty Of Assault, Gun Possession


A jury acquitted Sean “Puffy” Combs on all charges against him Friday evening, bringing to an end a 15-month ordeal that began after a shooting in a New York nightclub. Rapper Jamal “Shyne” Barrow was convicted of two counts of assault as well as reckless endangerment and gun possession. But he was cleared of the most serious charge he was facing, attempted murder. Linkin Park Responds To School Shooting


In the latest attempt to link music and school violence, the songs of California pop-metal band Linkin Park are being implicated in Monday’s Santee, Calif., shooting, in which 15-year-old Charles “Andy” Williams opened fire on his Santana High schoolmates, killing two and wounding 13. A friend of Williams’ appearing on NBC’s Today show said that Williams was a fan of the band and that he was influenced by three songs on the band’s Hybrid Theory album: “One Step Closer,” “Papercut,” and “In the End.” Linkin Park released a one-sentence statement about the shooting via its publicist. Accused homophobe Eminem will have a special guest for his Grammy performance of “Stan” – the openly bisexual Elton John.
