Sting Reached For Different Feel On New Live Album

Out Tuesday (November 20) is…All This Time, the live album Sting recorded in Tuscany, Italy, on September 11. The tone of the performance was, of course, affected by that day’s terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., and Sting pulled a planned webcast of the concert after performing just one song, “Fragile,” as a tribute to the victims. Using a larger band that includes string and horn players, Sting employs different arrangements on most of the album’s 15 songs, and he said that throughout his career he’s felt the freedom to tinker with even his biggest hits. “I’ve… Read more »

The Bee Gees Make the Pop of Ages

In a world where artistic lifespans are often judged in terms of fads, most pop music acts last no longer than the trends that briefly catapulted them to fame. And those are just the ones that are lucky enough to end up in the “where are they now?” files. It’s rare to find a band like the Bee Gees, who started their musical career when nine-year-old brother Barry was joined by his six-year-old twin siblings Robin and Maurice. The group scored their first No. 1 hit in their native Australia back in 1966 and broke out to a world audience… Read more »

No Doubt rocks steady for new album

Headliners in their own right, singer Gwen Stefani and her bandmates in No Doubt were so eager to showcase their forthcoming album, “Rock Steady,” they started touring as an opening act two months before the CD was due for release. Back on the road after an 18-month hiatus, No Doubt will be playing warmup dates for veteran Irish rockers U2 into early December. But far from feeling overshadowed by Bono and friends, Stefani sees the U2 gig as the perfect way for No Doubt to bring itself back in public view and prepare for the Dec. 11 release of its… Read more »

Femi Kuti a force to be reckoned with – Review

There is no part of a Femi Kuti show that doesn’t thrill or educate. It’s a whirlwind of African percussion, and American funk and soul married in a most danceable state by a colorfully dressed ensemble, with Kuti overseeing the maelstrom with either a saxophone or a set of dictum-weighted lyrics. His act, drawing heavily on material from his second album for MCA,”Fight to Win,” continues to set the bar for the term “first-rate” with new music that is loaded with colors softer than the ones found on his debut, “Shoki Shoki,” or in the Afrobeat music of his late… Read more »

Joey Ramone May Get His Way

More than six months after Joey Ramone’s death from lymphatic cancer, the Ramones frontman may have the corner of East Second Street and the Bowery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side named for him. A proposition before Community Board 3 would rename the corner, which neighbors the legendary club CBGB’s where the Ramones got their start, Joey Ramone Way. Longtime resident and CBGB club owner Hilly Kristal believes that Ramone embodied the spirit of punk and the Lower East Side. “He represents a new ilk of musicians and artists, and it crosses lines from music into art into theater because everybody… Read more »

Cue ear-splitting shrieks from millions of preteen girls. For Lance Bass, as most adults don’t know, is one-fifth of ‘N Sync, the mega-selling boy-band that has helped keep the music industry afloat in recent years. It’s hard to imagine ‘N Sync winning a Grammy Award for its lightweight pop.
