Dashboard Confessional and Jack Johnson played acoustic, and Beck and Coldplay celebrated Christmas, but otherwise KROQ-FM’s annual Almost Acoustic Christmas was a two-day, 20-act festival all about rocking. And the sold-out event was certainly crammed with rock and roll moments, particularly the announced live debut of Audioslave (they played a secret club show the night before), and an amusing rendition of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” orchestrated by Beck and the Flaming Lips and featuring Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, Johnson and a horribly off-key Juliette Lewis. Alien Ant Farm will take the stage Saturday for the first time since a bus accident in May left singer Dryden Mitchell with a broken back and injured the rest of his bandmates. The group will perform at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, California, as part of manufacturer Drum Workshop’s annual Drum Day L.A. benefit. When the teen rock band justincase went on the road to promote their self-titled CD on the Maverick label, they took their mother with them. That’s not surprising. When Sum 41 wrote last year’s All Killer No Filler, the bandmembers were all still in high school. Toilet-dunking bullies, drinking buddies, unrequited puppy love, impish practical jokes and weekend parties were what their lives consisted of, so that’s what the sang about. I spent 24 hours on the road with Good Charlotte recently. Most of what I saw I already knew from TV reports on tour-bus life, probably from episodes of “Diary”: You can’t do much in the bathroom, it’s eight grown men living in the space of a large bedroom, running water is a luxury and the food sucks.
