A U.S. tour by ’80s metal bands Great White, L.A. Guns and XYZ aimed at raising funds for the families of victims of the Rhode Island nightclub fire has been called off due to an inability to secure insurance. The 55-city tour was to raise money for the Station Family Fund, a nonprofit organization set up to assist the families and survivors of the February fire at the Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, which claimed the lives of 100 victims when a Great White pyrotechnics display went awry and set the club ablaze. The touring career of They Might Be Giants might be summed up as drum machine and post-drum machine. When band members John Flansburgh and John Linnell first started, they sang and played guitar, keyboards and accordion but used a drum machine to back them up. The chief lobby group of the nation’s major recording labels today said it is preparing hundreds of lawsuits against Internet users who illegally trade copyrighted music files. The lawsuits will target people who share “substantial” amounts of copyrighted music, but anyone who shares illegal files is at risk, RIAA President Cary Sherman said in a conference call today. The first round of lawsuits will be prepared during the next eight to 10 weeks. This summer Seattle rockers Queensryche return with the release of Tribe, the band’s first studio album on Sanctuary Records. Tribe, which will be released on July 22, 2003, follows Queensryche’s Sanctuary debut, Live Evolution, a career-spanning live collection, released in 2001. Meanwhile, Apple is looking to widen its offerings through deals with independent labels.
