New Creed Songs Take On Deeper Meaning After September 11

Creed has always sought to take its audiences higher with deeper lyrics than the average hard rock band has, so it’s no surprise that the songs on the trio’s new album, Weathered, due out Tuesday (November 20), also resonate with meaning. In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, however, those meanings might seem even more profound, and Creed frontman Scott Stapp said it’s something he and guitarist Mark Tremonti are ambivalent about. “I definitely think after the fact that people are gonna perceive some of these songs a lot different because of the events that happened on September… Read more »

Van Morrison has won libel damages because of an Irish newspaper report that alleged he had an affair with singer Linda Gail Lewis. A lawyer for the Sunday Independent apologized for the report to Morrison and his long-term partner Michelle Rocca in Belfast’s High Court Wednesday (November 14). The allegations had been taken from extracts of an interview Lewis did last month on an Irish television talk show. Following Lewis’s appearance on the show, Morrison issued a statement denying her claims that they had a sexual relationship, saying, “These outrageous allegations are a complete and utter fabrication.” The newspaper’s publishers… Read more »

Cure's Robert Smith Preps First Solo Album

Throughout their two-decade career, the Cure have always made music for lonely hearts, so it’s only fitting that frontman Robert Smith be alone for once. Smith hopes to begin recording his first solo album in January or February, once he’s through promoting the Cure’s Greatest Hits, which includes two new songs and acoustic renditions of fan favorites. The pale-faced misanthrope said he started fostering ideas for the LP after finishing the Cure’s last studio album, 2000’s Bloodflowers, and it’s been an on-and-off endeavor ever since. “I was just at the point of coordinating it all earlier this year when the… Read more »

Depeche Mode Says Europe Music 'Terror-Resistant'

British band Depeche Mode said on Thursday the September 11 suicide hijack attacks in the United States had hardly affected European musicians and concert-goers. He contrasted this to the U.S. situation, where the music industry had slowed down. Andy Fletcher, keyboardist in the technopop band that is still going after 22 years, said Europeans had had more experience of “terrorist attacks” than Americans and as a result were able to get on with their lives more quickly. “A lot of American bands and acts have canceled because they are not really used to terrorism in their own country,” Fletcher said… Read more »

Calif. Senator Prepares Measure on Music Contracts

A California state senator plans to draft a bill that would free recording artists from restrictive, multi-year contracts, a system stars have attacked as unfairly stacked in favor of the major music labels. Under current California law, record companies are granted a special exemption that allows them to sue musicians and singers for albums not produced over the course of seven-year contracts. Stars including Don Henley, Courtney Love and the Dixie Chicks testified in the state Senate last month that the special status granted to the record labels in California in 1987 was unfair and should be repealed. State Sen.… Read more »
