The White Stripes’ much-heralded new album “Elephant” (XL Recordings) stampeded the U.K. chart on Sunday, going straight to No. 1, while “Make Luv” by Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham (Positiva) retained its place at the top of the singles chart. Sheep Head Breaks Music Fan's Skull


A flying sheep’s head hit a concertgoer and fractured his skull at a concert of metal band Mayhem. The band, part of Norway’s death metal music scene, was carving up a dead sheep as part of its stage act when the animal’s head flew off lead singer Maniac’s knife and struck Per Kristian Hagen, 25. Billy Joel Reportedly Drinking Before Recent Car Crash


A published report says Billy Joel was drinking champagne shortly before his January car crash on his native Long Island. The East Hampton Star reports that Joel told police he had had “a glass of champagne” while having dinner with two friends at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor on January 25, although he now claims not to remember the conversation. Eminem stepped out in suburban Detroit on Saturday (March 1) to check out Buddha Fulla Rymez, a group that is rumored to be the next signee for his Shady Records label. Eminem attended the show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre with his ex-wife Kim, a bodyguard, and other friends. Ex-Heartbreakers Bassist Epstein Dies


Howie Epstein, a former bass player for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, died of what authorities suspect was a drug overdose. He was 47. Investigators were told Epstein had been using heroin, said Maj. Ron Madrid of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department. Epstein was driven to St. Vincent Hospital by his girlfriend, who described him as “under distress.” He died Sunday. Epstein had been a respected musician and producer for more than 20 years. Viacom Reports Better 4Q Earnings


Viacom Inc., owner of the CBS network and Showtime movie channels, reported a fourth-quarter profit Wednesday, turning around a year-ago loss thanks to strong growth in its cable network and TV businesses. The results exceeded Wall Street expectations, but investors reacted cautiously amid concerns about the company’s leadership. For the three months ending Dec. 31, the media conglomerate earned $652.4 million, or 37 cents per share, compared with a loss of $42.5 million, or 2 cents per share, at the same time a year ago. Hip-Hop Mogul Simmons Urges Pepsi Boycott


Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network said an economic boycott of Pepsi would start next week unless the company runs an ad featuring the rapper Ludacris that was pulled last year. “Falling out of favor in the hip-hop community could be very damaging,” Simmons said Wednesday.
