Taking Back Sunday, MCR Unite For Tsunami Benefit

SAYREVILLE, New Jersey – This small Jersey ‘burb is pretty far removed from Banda Aceh or Phuket (and even though it’s Jon Bon Jovi’s hometown, it’s pretty far removed from Manhattan, too). But on Wednesday night, Sayreville played host to the first in a series of benefit shows dubbed the Concerts for Tsunami Relief. It was a big show for an even bigger cause. The concert – co-sponsored by Linkin Park’s Music for Relief charity and New York radio giant K-Rock – was held at the Starland Ballroom, a very un-ballroom-like venue just off of Sayreville’s winding Jernee Mill Road,… Read more »

Scott Weiland Misses The Memo On When To Make Political Statements

Scott Weiland has secured himself a spot as the very last celebrity to speak out about today’s U.S. presidential election. A little late in the game, the singer – famous for Stone Temple Pilots, taking a whole lot of drugs, and now Velvet Revolver – posted an anti-Bush message on his band’s website last night. Yep, last night. The night before the election. As part of his lengthy statement, Weiland defended his late arrival on the political scene: “If you’re asking, ‘Why did you post this now? The day of?’ It’s because I want it to be the last thing… Read more »

Finch: Emotion Is Their Middle Name

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Up until that point, my interview with two-fifths of Temecula, California’s Finch was going rather smoothly. That is, of course, until I mentioned the “E” word. Suddenly, I struck a nerve. “We’re not ‘emo’,” says guitarist Randy Strohmeyer wearily. “People can call us whatever they want to help them identify with the music because when it comes down to it, it’s just the music anyway.” He pauses for a moment, before adding: “But if you ask us, we don’t really care. We don’t call ourselves anything besides a rock band because our… Read more »

Simon, Garfunkel May Unite for New Tour

It looks like Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are reuniting for a concert tour. The former duo has reserved dates at concert arenas across the country, said Gary Bongiovanni, editor of Pollstar, a concert industry trade publication. And they were scheduled to make a “very special announcement” at a New York nightclub on Tuesday, publicists said. There has been talk of a tour since Simon & Garfunkel performed together to open the Grammy Awards ceremony in February, and they’ve done the logistical groundwork, Bongiovanni said. “Everyone’s been expecting it,” he said. “It was still in the speculative stages, because you… Read more »

Duran Duran Reunite At Roxy In L.A. – Review

Tuesday night (July 15), the original ’80s Duran Duran lineup (singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist Andy Taylor, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor) celebrated their 25th anniversary by playing Los Angeles’s 450-capacity Roxy nightclub as a warm-up for their much-hyped brief U.S. reunion tour, which officially kicks off tonight at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California. Not only was this the group’s first Stateside performance in 18 years, but it also marked another homecoming of sorts, as the Roxy was the first American venue Duran Duran ever played back in 1981. Although Duran Duran have… Read more »

Evanescence Ignites Christian Music Controversy

Christian rock band Evanescence is officially no longer a Christian rock band. Following a recent interview in which it used profanity and made clear that it does not want to be known as a Christian act, Evanescence’s albums are being pulled from Christian retailers and its material will be removed from the Christian charts. Provident Music Distribution, the Christian distribution arm of BMG’s Zomba unit, says it will no longer handle the Wind-Up Records act. Don Noes, senior VP of Provident – which had been distributing Evanescence’s debut album, “Fallen” – has issued a letter to its accounts saying Wind-Up… Read more »

Great White to Reunite for One Song

The rock band Great White plans to perform together for the first time since the band’s Feb. 20 concert in Rhode Island resulted in a nightclub fire that killed 99 people. Survivors of the group say they will perform one song at West Hollywood’s Key Club on April 29 to raise money for a memorial fund in honor of their late guitarist, Ty Longley, the group’s manager, Paul Woolnough, said Friday. The charity concert will benefit the late guitarist’s pregnant girlfriend, victim relief funds and students seeking art scholarships. Great White has no other plans to perform again, Woolnough added,… Read more »

Weezer, Saves The Day Trade Blows In 'Emo Puppet Video War'

Biggie and Tupac, Jay-Z and Nas, Axl and Kurt, Oasis and the bulk of humanity… some musical beefs are sublime, and some are ridiculous. The latest, between Weezer and Saves the Day, is a little bit of both. When reports surfaced that Weezer wrangled Jim Henson’s Muppets for their new video, “Keep Fishin’,” last month, the “emo and puppets” premise gave their former opening band a case of déjà vu. Nearly two months ago, Saves the Day – who opened for Weezer in February – wrapped a video for their second single, “Freakish,” featuring (surprise, surprise) a supporting cast of… Read more »

More than 25 artists – from boys (of the Backstreet, ‘NSYNC and O-Town variety) to men (elder statesmen such as Aerosmith, James Brown and Rod Stewart), from vocal queens (Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Carole King) to the King of Pop – took the stage Sunday at RFK Stadium for the all-day United We Stand – What More Can I Give benefit concert for victims of September’s terrorist attacks. Themes of unity and perseverance permeated every performance, with artists often thanking the sold-out crowd for the message they were sending to the rest of the country – that no matter the… Read more »

Singer Aaliyah's Body Flown To United States

The body of the late pop and soul singer Aaliyah was flown back to the United States Tuesday as safety experts examined the plane that crashed in the Bahamas, killing her and eight others. A private jet carrying the body of the 22-year-old singer and movie actress landed at Newark International Airport in New Jersey, and a hearse carried the casket away to an unknown location, according to sources. Several hours earlier, heartbroken fans gathered outside a Nassau funeral home to watch as a black hearse drove away with Aaliyah’s body. At Nassau International Airport, police stood guard while her… Read more »
