Harrison brought "Something'' special to Beatles

He was called the “Quiet Beatle,” but “Frustrated Beatle” may have been a better tag for George Harrison, who found himself overshadowed in the Fab Four by two of the most important songwriters in history. Still, the guitarist managed to create a memorable body of work with the Beatles, and he notably turned his bandmates onto Eastern mysticism. Harrison, who died in Los Angeles Thursday after a long battle with cancer, wrote and sang such Beatles nuggets as “Something,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here Comes The Sun” and “Taxman.” After the Beatles broke up, he embarked on a patchy… Read more »

Beatles' Birthplace Liverpool Remembers George

The birthplace of the world’s most famous band the Beatles remembered George Harrison on Saturday as an inspirational musician, a spiritual man of conviction and a reluctant celebrity. Outside the Liverpool house where Harrison was born 58 years ago, fans from as far afield the United States and Australia braved the northern English cold to pay tribute to the man known as the “Quiet Beatle.” “George: a man of conviction along with John. Rest in peace,” said a note written by a fan placed with a bunch of flowers on the windowsill of the tiny house in Arnold Grove. Eddie… Read more »

Harrison fans gather at Beatles Hollywood star

The minute he heard that Beatle George Harrison was dead, George Metropolis rushed to Hollywood Boulevard Friday to say goodbye – to his look-alike. There, Metropolis, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the “Quiet Beatle” who died on Thursday of cancer, joined teary-eyed fans, many of them middle-aged ex-hippies, who gathered near the Beatles’ star on Hollywood’s “Walk of Fame” to leave flowers, candles, and silently pray for the rock icon who was so much a part of their youth. “I met him once in 1979. He walked into this bar and saw me and said to his bodyguard, ‘That… Read more »

U.S. wants its MTV to get message out in Arab world

The architects of the government’s post-Sept. 11 propaganda war may well want their MTV on the frontlines in the Arab world. Rushing to shift perceptions of the United States in the Islamic world, Washington and Hollywood are now brainstorming about how the entertainment business might help convey a wider – and more positive – range of perceptions about America. And no demo is more crucial to the future of Islamic-Western relations than the 15-30 age group. That’s where MTV comes in. The potential to intersperse messages between programming segments – as with the “Rock the Vote” campaign, for example –… Read more »

New Creed Songs Take On Deeper Meaning After September 11

Creed has always sought to take its audiences higher with deeper lyrics than the average hard rock band has, so it’s no surprise that the songs on the trio’s new album, Weathered, due out Tuesday (November 20), also resonate with meaning. In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, however, those meanings might seem even more profound, and Creed frontman Scott Stapp said it’s something he and guitarist Mark Tremonti are ambivalent about. “I definitely think after the fact that people are gonna perceive some of these songs a lot different because of the events that happened on September… Read more »
