Cold Singer Relates To Road-Weary Wrestlers

When the creators of the upcoming WWF album Tough Enough 2 asked Cold to contribute a track, frontman Scooter Ward was baffled. He thought, what did his music – riddled with gloomy, nihilist imagery and creepy underpinnings – have in common with the muscle-bound, over-the-top world of pro wrestling? Then it occurred to him that being in a band on the run and flying off the top turnbuckle night after night had some similarities after all. “I was writing a song for my kid at the same time,” Ward said last week. “Leaving home all the time, never being here… Read more »

No Doubt Comes Home For Two Sold-Out Gigs

No Doubt comes home to Southern California tonight (March 27) for the first of two gigs at L.A.’s Universal Amphitheater in support of its current album, Rock Steady. The shows are sold out, demonstrating the Orange County, California band’s popularity throughout the region. Drummer Adrian Young said that they “feel the love” back home. Guitarist Tom Dumont adds that there’s also other perks of being local heroes. “We’re a little bit spoiled being from L.A. and Orange County when we go out, you know, to clubs or go hang out there. It’s fun to be recognized and to be able… Read more »

Dashboard Confessional, Custom, Abandoned Pools Don't Need No Stinkin' Band

“One-man band”: when you hear that phrase you probably picture a dude on a street corner with a pair of cymbals between his knees, a drum on his back, some kazoos in his mouth and a guitar case full of quarters. Think again. While naming a band after yourself is fine and good for guys like Dave Matthews and Jon Spencer, some band names are actually just cryptic pseudonyms for a single, mad studio genius. The past year has seen an explosion of do-it-yourself-ers, including ex-Eels bassist Tommy Walter with his band Abandoned Pools, stone alone emo-ter Chris Carrabba of… Read more »

Long Lines For Clinic, Lynch Mob For Icarus Line At SXSW

The 16th annual South by Southwest music conference drew to a close Sunday, and the only thing that lasts longer than the seemingly perpetual hangover that results from four debauched days of a music industry on spring break is the buzz emanating from the bands and key moments that defined this year’s festival. Of the more than 1,000 bands showcasing their chops before press, radio programmers, managers, lawyers, label execs and promoters in 48 venues strewn throughout Austin, Texas, a handful traditionally rise above the chaff to become the targets of hype hucksters and topics of critical discussion for weeks… Read more »

Alicia Keys To Hit The Road In July

It’s been a heck of a year so far for Alicia Keys, who took home five Grammy Awards in February for her album Songs in A Minor, which has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. And, with a multitude of appearances and a full summer tour on her schedule, her star should shine bright well through the year. Keys’ 35-date North American tour will begin in Milwaukee on July 2 at Summerfest and will run through August 30 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the American Music Festival. Keys will celebrate Independence Day in New Orleans at the Essence Festival;… Read more »

Feuding Bands Get Chance to Make Up

In some ways, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s induction ceremony is like a family reunion, giving loved ones a chance to reconnect and share loving memories. But as with many families, feuds can simmer and threaten to ruin that nice little gathering. The unknown element in the weeks leading up to the hall’s annual event is often whether hard feelings can be set aside. On Monday, the Talking Heads – the foursome that was part of punk’s first generation and stayed together for more than a decade before dissolving in acrimony and lawsuits in the 1990s – were… Read more »

House Rep's Rap: Unshackle the CD

Music CDs equipped with copy protection will, if Rick Boucher gets his wish, soon be as obsolete as eight-track cassettes. The feisty Democratic congressman from Virginia says he plans to introduce legislation banning, or at least regulating, compact discs outfitted with anti-copying technology. Few discs sold in America currently feature the controversial scheme – but the recording industry expects that as worries over digital piracy grow, the technique will become widespread. “Suffice to say, there probably will be a legislative response to ensure that consumer rights will be protected,” Boucher said in an interview. Boucher’s complaints are twofold: Americans may… Read more »

Silverchair has completed work on their eagerly anticipated label debut. The album – titled “DIORAMA” – is currently slated to be released in North America on July 9th. Their first new album in three years, “DIORAMA” is unquestionably Silverchair’s most multi-dimensional work to date. The Newcastle, Australia-based trio – singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou, and drummer Ben Gillies – recorded the collection in the fall of 2001 at Sydney’s Studio 301 with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson). “DIORAMA” features guest appearances from Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie and Australian electronica producer Paul Mac. In addition, the… Read more »

Limp Bizkit Narrows Guitar Search Hopefuls

Limp Bizkit’s nationwide search for a new guitarist has come to a close, and the hard rock group has invited several of its favorite picks from the auditions to continue jamming, in hopes that seeds for a new album will soon be planted. “We are so excited to bring several of the people we jammed with on the tour back to L.A. to see what could possibly become of it,” says frontman Fred Durst on the group’s official Web site. “You just never know. I am sure that this will be our best album yet.” Durst, a VP at Interscope… Read more »

Bono Smooched By Clinton, Cruise, Carmen Electra At 'Love Rocks' Love Fest

For what was supposed to be a valentine to Bono (“Bahn-o”), there sure were a lot of references to Bono (“Bone-o”) Thursday night. First, on the red carpet leading into the new Kodak Theatre, Evan and Jaron joked that they thought the inaugural “Love Rocks” concert was honoring the late Sonny Bono. Then, R.E.M. carried on the joke by bringing out Cher during their four-song set to duet with singer Michael Stipe on “I Got You Babe,” after which Cher said, “I’ve never done that song without my Bono, so that was for you, Bono.” Finally, when accepting his Heart… Read more »
