Justin Timberlake Working 'NSecret On Star-Packed Solo LP

Justin Timberlake’s debut solo project is not only one of the most anticipated albums of the year, it is one of the most well guarded. The ‘NSYNC star has been in and out of recording studios all year, yet neither his record label nor his management will say anything about the record. Still, the music industry is buzzing and details are trickling out. Most are coming from collaborators – and there appear to be many – but Timberlake himself has spilled a few beans. Phoning in to Orlando’s WJHM-FM last week, he told DJs the album will be out “hopefully… Read more »

Contestants, Judges Battle on 'Idol'

The competition is heating up on Fox’s hit talent search series “American Idol,” and that’s just between the judges. Acid-tongued Simon Cowell and fellow judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson traded barbs in a news conference Monday that included the show’s eight young finalists. After a group performance of “California Dreamin’” for the Television Critics Association by the would-be singing stars, most of the entertainment was provided by the judges. Papa Ozzy Bares Fangs Again As Ozzfest Hits Boston

Nickelback's Next Single Inspired By 'How You Remind Me' Girl

If three singles can help sell in excess of 4 million records, why not roll out a fourth? This fall Nickelback will release “Woke Up This Morning” as the next offering from their breakthrough LP, Silver Side Up. The song, which was written in January 2000, addresses two emotional issues that affected frontman Chad Kroeger during the creation of the track. The first was the loss of his grandmother, who passed away a few days before he started writing the lyrics. “I was just really unimpressed with the way the whole funeral took place,” he said recently. “I felt it… Read more »

Royalty requirement may kill Web sites broadcasting music

If music Webcasting – the streaming of music over the Internet instead of through radio receivers – makes it through the present decade, it will be no thanks to the federal bureaucracy. A much-dreaded ruling out of Washington, D.C., last month could mean the end of small Webcasters and the crippling of large ones. Webcasting has been under the shadow of this impending ruling since October 1998, when the Digital Millennium Copyright Act declared that Webcasters should pay performance royalties. Now the damage is clear: The government has set the rate. Performance royalties are payments to the owners of copyrighted… Read more »
