Singer Robert Palmer, 54, Dies in Paris

Robert Palmer, the well-tailored British rock singer who created one of the first iconic music videos with the look-alike models of “Addicted to Love,” has died of a heart attack. He was 54. A two-time Grammy winner in the 1980s, the star behind the hit “Simply Irresistible” died of a heart attack Friday at a Paris hotel during a stopover after a promotional tour in Britain, manager Mick Cater said. Sporting designer suits and a thick mane of hair, Palmer shot to fame in the mid-’80s with two videos featuring a “backup band” of dark-haired women in black miniskirts strumming… Read more »

Makers of Kazaa Are Suing Record Labels

Turning the tables on record labels, makers of the most popular file-sharing network are suing entertainment companies for copyright infringement. Sharman Networks, the company behind the Kazaa file-sharing software, filed a federal lawsuit on Monday accusing the entertainment companies of using unauthorized versions of its software in their efforts to snoop out users. Sharman said the companies used Kazaa Lite, an ad-less replica of its software, to get onto the network. The lawsuit also claims efforts to combat piracy on Kazaa violated terms for using the network. Entertainment companies have offered bogus versions of copyright works and sent online messages… Read more »

Mooney Suzuki Save Jack Black's Butt, Plan To Work With The Matrix

A couple of years ago, a crazed Mooney Suzuki fan bum-rushed the band during a show and squirted mustard on singer/guitarist Sammy James Jr.’s fuzz box guitar pedal. The guy was apparently pissed that the garage rockers had “sold out” and signed with tiny indie label Estrus Records for their 2000 debut, People Get Ready, so he shouted, “Why don’t you have Estrus buy you a new one!” If that’s how he felt then, things could get much uglier next year when the band releases its as-yet-untitled third album, the first under its new deal with Columbia Records. Not to… Read more »

A new version of The Beatles’ album “Let It Be” will be released in November, the group’s company Apple Corps announced Thursday. “Let It Be…Naked” strips the 1969 album of Phil Spector’s lavish production effects, returning to Sir Paul McCartney’s original idea for the recording. “This is the noise we made in the studio,” McCartney said of the new version. “It’s exactly as it was in the room. You’re right there now.” “Let It Be…Naked” mostly keeps the same track listing as the original album, which featured songs Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road, Get Back and Across… Read more »

Grandma Sues Eminem

It’s about time Grandma finally stood up to Eminem. A 70-year-old California woman is suing the rap superstar, claiming he illegally sampled a section of music from her late husband’s film score for his 1999 debut, The Slim Shady LP, the Smoking Gun Website reports. The suit, filed in federal court last month on behalf of Harlene Stein, accuses Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) and his mentor Dr. Dre (aka Andre Young) of swiping a 24-second instrumental cue titled “Pigs Go Home” from her hubby Ronald Stein’s composition for 1970’s Getting Straight, a flick starring Elliot Gould and Candice Bergen,… Read more »
