FCC Cites Stern, Bono for Indecency

Federal regulators opened a new front in their crackdown on offensive broadcasts Thursday, saying that almost any use of the F-word on over-the-air radio and television would be considered indecent. The Federal Communications Commission overruled its staff and said an expletive uttered by rock singer Bono on NBC was both indecent and profane. It marked the first time that the FCC cited a four-letter word as profane; the commission previously equated profanity with language challenging God’s divinity. The FCC on Thursday also proposed maximum fines for the broadcast of the Howard Stern radio show and for a program on two… Read more »

Service providers resist tracking pirates

Internet service providers have neither an obligation nor, in some cases, the technical means to help the recording industry identify 29 alleged music pirates, a federal judge heard yesterday. The Canadian Recording Industry Association has asked for a federal court order that would force the country’s five largest high-speed service providers to disclose the names, addresses and other personal information relating to unauthorized “uploaders” of copyrighted music. Lawyers for the group argued yesterday that the ISPs “hold the key” to identifying the 29 accused file-swappers and have a duty to co-operate that overrides any privacy concerns related to policy, legislation… Read more »

FCC Urges Maximum Fine for Explicit Radio Show

The Federal Communications Commission said on Friday that Clear Channel Communications Inc. should pay the maximum penalty of nearly $250,000 for airing a sexually explicit radio broadcast. Clear Channel, the nation’s largest radio-station owner, should pay $247,500 – the maximum indecency fine allowable by law – for an episode of “Elliot in the Morning” that aired on stations in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Delaware, the FCC said. A Clear Channel official said the company would investigate the situation. “If we made a mistake, we’ll certainly live with the consequences,” said Andrew Levin, Clear Channel executive vice president for law and… Read more »

Snoop's 213 Supergroup Signs Deal; The Hard Way Due This Spring

Whether he wore his Huggy Bear attire is unclear, but Snoop Dogg had some business meetings before he attended the “Starsky & Hutch” premiere a couple of weeks back. If the rapper appeared a little more lively than his usual laid-back self at Los Angeles’ Mann’s Westwood Village theater, it’s probably because his all-star group 213, featuring Warren G and Nate Dogg, signed a record deal hours before. “We just did the deal with TVT today, so y’all be on the lookout,” Snoop said as he strolled the red carpet in full-on pimp wear. “The album should be out late… Read more »

JC Takes Cover from Cover

Justin Timberlake suffered a wardrobe malfunction. JC Chasez is suffering what could be called a titular malfunction. Timberlake’s fellow ‘N Syncer is in so-sorry mode after a leading advocate of the schizophrenic took offense to the title of Chasez’s just-released solo album. The one called Schizophrenic. For the record, the cover art-depicting a mussy-haired Chasez in a straight jacket-didn’t go over too big with Bill MacPhee, either. In a statement Monday, MacPhee, publisher of Schizophrenia Digest, and a diagnosed schizophrenic, called Chasez’s appropriation of the brain disorder a misappropriation, and criticized his record label, Jive. “Through the album title and… Read more »

Westlife Blow May Spell End for Irish Boy-Band

Chart-toppers Westlife announced Tuesday that singer Bryan McFadden was quitting the group, a move that could signal the beginning of the end for the Irish boy-band. However, manager Louis Walsh insisted it was business as usual for the remaining four members, who are currently rehearsing for a mammoth world tour. McFadden, aged 23, said he was leaving to spend more time with wife Kerry, the recent winner of the British hit television show “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!” and their two young children. “It’s nothing to do with the guys,” he told a packed news conference in Dublin,… Read more »

Velvet Revolver Album Preview: GN'R + STP = Uphill Battle

The odds are stacked against Velvet Revolver. Their singer, Scott Weiland, is currently in drug rehab for the umpteenth time. Who knows if he’ll be a free man when it’s time to tour, and judging from his past history, it could be a struggle for him to stay clean when the band hits the road. As for his bandmates – ex-Guns N’ Roses members Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass) and Matt Sorum (drums), and former Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Dave Kushner – they’re ready to rock, but there’s some question whether the rock community is ready to embrace them. Over a… Read more »

Jackson Pulled Over While Wearing Mask

Michael Jackson was pulled over by police and asked to identify himself after shopping at a Wal-Mart while wearing a ski mask. An employee called police Tuesday, police Lt. Bill Kimminau said. The employee gave a description of the vehicle and Jackson was stopped a short time later. Authorities asked Jackson to identify himself, which he did by removing his mask. “There were no problems, and that was it,” Kimminau said. Jackson spokeswoman Raymone Bain said the incident was a trifle. “The police car pulled to the side and just asked that he show his face, and he did, and… Read more »

Catch Him On Tour, But On Film Dave Matthews Wants To Be Missed

Dave Matthews has plenty of things to do and places to go – what with his band regrouping for a summer tour, re-signing to RCA Records and beginning pre-production on a new album – but during his break from the DMB, the frontman pretended to be someone with no goals and nowhere to go. In Matthews’ first film role, “Because of Winn-Dixie,” he plays a drifter. “How on earth could I be a drifter?” Matthews asked. “If I didn’t have the job I have right now, if I wasn’t playing music, who knows? I could have been a scientist, but… Read more »
