Yahoo, Gracenote Launch Lyrics Service

Yahoo Inc. and digital media company Gracenote launched an online lyrics service on Tuesday, the first industry-backed effort in a market dominated by unauthorized, rogue Web sites. Song lyrics are among the top searches performed on the Web, but consumers have largely relied on unlicensed sources that often provide inaccurate and incomplete lyrics and do not compensate composers for their work. “Finally, a free, legal and definitive way to settle a bet with the guy sitting next to you at the bar who is certain the Ramones’ most famous anthem declares, ‘I wanna piece of bacon,”‘ said Ian Rogers, general… Read more »

Their college tour ended, Sheryl Crow and Laurie David describe their efforts to stop global warming as part of the most important mission of the times. That’s the hope of Grammy-winning rocker Crow and David, who produced “An Inconvenient Truth,” the global-warming movie that won the Oscar for best documentary. “It’s great to go out and play music, and I love that, too. And it’s also nice to make money. But this is not that,” Crow said Sunday in an interview. “This is a whole bunch of people dedicating their time, their lives, working for free, for a mission. Arctic Monkeys face the music with 2nd album

Young indie rockers Arctic Monkeys, who made history with Britain’s fastest-selling debut album in 2006, are out to prove they are no one-hit wonders with their second record released on Monday. Critics wonder if the weight of expectation will be too much for the musicians from the northern city of Sheffield, among the first to make it big by harnessing the power of the Internet. Alexis Petridis, music critic for the Guardian newspaper, called “Favourite Worst Nightmare” arguably the most anticipated second album in a decade. Judging by early reviews and the reaction of fans at gigs across the country,… Read more »

Sanjaya Finally Gets the Ax

Somewhere out there, “American Idol” producers, and judge Simon Cowell, are hoisting frosty ones and heaving huge sighs of relief. After an inexplicably long run that was full of flash, goofy haircuts, gleaming smiles and more showmanship than all of the other finalists combined, phenom “Idol” underdog Sanjaya Malakar finally ran out of gas Wednesday night. Following a painfully flat rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About” on Tuesday night’s country-themed show , Malakar was sent home to the grinning satisfaction of Cowell, who hinted before the elimination that he suspected the jig was up. The night began with… Read more »

Simon Rolls His Eyes After Seacrest's VT Comments

Tuesday night’s episode of “American Idol” began on a somber note as Ryan Seacrest sent out condolences to all those affected by Monday’s Virginia Tech shootings. But by the end of the night, people accused the show’s most famous face of making light of the tragic events. After “Idol” finalist Chris Richardson sang what judge Simon Cowell deemed a “nasal” version of Rascal Flatts’ “Mayberry” , the Virginia native shot back: “Nasally is a form of singing, I don’t know if you know that or not.” Before Cowell had a chance to respond, Richardson added, “My heart and prayers go… Read more »

Pete Wentz On Fall Out Boy Tour Delay: 'It's A Health Issue, But Nothing Serious '

Five days after announcing that Fall Out Boy were postponing the Honda Civic Tour due to “personal issues” (a nebulous explanation that put the rumor mill into overdrive with a quickness), Pete Wentz would like to make several things clear: “No one has left the band, no one is dead, and no one is going to rehab,” he told MTV News late Monday. “I need that as a big pull-quote, man, because everyone thinks that. It’s the danger of language and the danger of the times we’re in. “It’s a health issue, but not a health issue that anyone needs… Read more »

Panic! At The Disco Planning 'Love Story'

You’d think the guys in Panic! at the Disco would have a whole buncha goals in mind for the follow-up to their platinum debut, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. But, no – they have just one. “Actually, our whole goal for this CD is to create a close relationship with Dr. Dre. You know, getting some sort of business plan worked out,” bassist Jon Walker laughed. “I mean, the guy’s a genius.” Of course he’s joking (we think), because there’s clearly more on the line for them this time around. Which is probably why, earlier this month, they announced… Read more »
