Bowie Releases Rare Discs

David Bowie will release two lost albums September 11th on Virgin Records. The first album, All Saints, is a rare collection of David Bowie’s instrumentals from 1977 to 1999. It will be the material’s second incarnation, however, as the music was initially compiled by Bowie in 1993 as a Christmas present for friends. Once a double CD aggressively sought after by fans, the collection will fit onto a single disc for its commercial release. In addition, it will feature new artwork by Bowie in lieu of that found on the original copies. Aside from previously available cuts, including “Buddha of… Read more »

Music Sales Slide Despite Napster Demise

U.S. album sales have declined in the first half of the year, despite the demise of song-swap service Napster, which the recording industry claimed would depress sales and hurt their bottom lines. According to New York-based SoundScan, which tracks music retail trends, sales of current albums – recordings released less than 18 months ago – have fallen about 8 percent year-to-date, while sales of all albums fell about 2.8 percent. Many music company officials shrug off the decline, blaming it on a lack of mega-hits and a slowdown in the economy. Many also predict the trend will improve in the… Read more »

Kid Rock's Sidekick In Spotlight

Pudgy and shy, 13-year-old Matt Shafer had an outlet in rap but few to really share it with – until a chance day he saw Bob Ritchie work the deejay’s turntable. “Wickie-wickie-wickie,” was how the skinny, smug 16-year-old Ritchie scratched records during a deejay contest, his baseball cap’s visor flipped up and a rapper’s clock dangling from his neck. The showman did his thing backward, even upside down. “Everything about him was cool – the way he dressed, the way he talked. I admired him, looked up to him. He was kind of like an older brother to me,” Shafer… Read more »

Xzibit had just flown to New York on Sunday after bringing the ruckus all night at a Baltimore concert, and he was in desperate need of a quicker picker upper. “I didn’t even know it was Sunday,” he told one of the members of his small entourage on the way to breakfast. “I just went to the [Loud Records] office and they were closed.” The best way of waking up for the Golden State mic warrior isn’t Folgers coffee. All you have to do is let him know you’re not an L.A. Lakers fan. “How can you not like the… Read more »

Bottoms Up For Spinal Tap

When The Spinal Tap performed Monday night at Carnegie Hall, it was as if the thirty-four-year-old British heavy metal band was playing for the first time in three days. With the three founding Spinal Tap members – David St. Hubbins, on guitar and vocals; Nigel Tufnel, on lead guitar; and Derek Smalls, on bass – Spinal Tap played “Carnegie ‘Fucking’ Hall” as if they were the same band they have always been. And yet with accompaniment by longtime keyboardist Caucasian Jeffrey Vaston, and with Skippy Skuffelton accepting the suicide mission of drums, Spinal Tap actually are still the same band… Read more »

A Flashy Night For Movie Stars

Stars figured they could say and do just about anything at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night. “And I’m gonna,” presenter Halle Berry predicted two hours before she took the stage with her Swordfish co-stars, John Travolta and Hugh Jackman. Playing off the rumor (which she later denied) that she received an extra $500,000 to show her breasts in her upcoming action movie, Berry encouraged the two men to show a body part. Then she patted their buns as they playfully unbuttoned their jackets in striptease fashion. It was all part of the fun that took place at… Read more »

Aretha Franklin Collaborates On CD

Aretha Franklin is usually the headliner, but the Queen of Soul has agreed to a guest appearance on a live recording by Detroit-born saxophonist James Carter. Franklin’s participation is expected to give the recording a pop-culture glitter that could introduce Detroit jazz to a broader audience. “It’s an homage to what happens live when I’m in Detroit,” he told the Detroit Free Press. “I want to let folks know this is where I come from and that there’s still the jazz spirit here.” Carter, 32, said Wednesday he had not yet ironed out details with Franklin, but the singer had… Read more »
